Another option is to join the British Council Library. They have a range of Novels, Educational Books, DVD's & Videos. All of which are used and donated by expats that have left the country. There's a charge for a years membership but it's not much compared to what you would spend on books over the year. It's at the top of Al Saad Rd. facing the Tavoli furniture shop.
I totally agree with Super7, although I would not use his/her choice of language; the selection of books is poor. Imported magazines are very expensive, if they are monthly, you are far better of subscribing. If you subscribe, you normally get a good discount and this will go someway to cover the postage.
If you know where to look on the Internet, many magazines, including the latest issues, are available to download in PDF format.

Although the best in town it is still crap and expensive. Better off with amazon.co.uk

There are some places but the perfect place is Jarir Book Store, it is located after Ramda signals in your way to Salwa road and close to Modern Home.
You will find all what you want there even books or UK magazines.
