Khan is a title given to pathans for their bravery.Pathan and Pashtun is the same thing.
Khan was a title given to muslim rulers, and now is a common surname which is commonly used by the Pashtun people, due to the aryanisation of that particular part of asia.

The greatest of all Khans the Great Genghis Khan was not a Pashtun. He was a mongol. His father was a small Khan who ruled parts of Mongolia. When Temudjinn became Khan he conquered half of Asia including China and all of Afghanistan. All the Pashtuns who are otherwise great warriors were dead scared of the real Khan.

So the Pathans may have been inspired by this Mongol and copied the Khan from the real great Khan.

The word Khan is attached to the elder, respected or powerful person.

You said some Rajputs use word Khan, its was given to him during the British Raj in actual there are not a original Khans. Khans Originally belongs from Central Asia, Particularly in Afghanistan and Pakistan.

By nature they are Marshall, in Afghanistan they fight Britannia (then superpower) in 1800s, in 1970-80 they fight USSR (then superpower) and now they are fighting with current super (USA).

In other words Khans backyard is grave yard of superpowers.

Simple and loving people.
