A lot depends on who you will be working for. The western based contractors are generally better organised than the middle east ones.

Whilst the projects aspire to have western HSE standards, in reality they do not have a hope. Because of the large cross section of ationalities, communication is a big problem and the different cultures bring there own issues. In a lot of these countries life is cheap. The words risk , hazard and management are not yet in the dictionary.

Qatar has a lot of money to spend, but not much idea how best to spend it!

1. Learn the Labour Law: http://www.hasher.net/QLL.doc

2. Expect to see labourers sat around doing &#$% all! - It's hot - they need rest

3. Get a good supervisor who speaks as many languages as possible.

4. Get a good HSE man who has respect of the workers - Remember - Safety First!

5. Treat your workforce well and they will work well

6. Have a good set of Policies and Procedures and follow them to the letter.

7. Expect delays in materials - especially concrete!!

8. Keep LOTS of cold water on site (see 2 above)

This should get you off to a good start
