American School of Doha - Ripp Offs

Please help me understand ASD ripp-offs

-------------------------------------------------
Why are we required to provide the following supplies for our children at ASD after paying thousands of Dollars in advance for our kids?!? I did not see this as a practice in other schools of Doha?

6 Large glue sticks ( 6 oz.)
2 Large bottles of Elmer's Glue
1 Pack of 12 colored pencils - Crayola / Faber Castell
1 Pack of washable Crayola markers (thin line)
1 Pack of washable Crayola markers (thick line)
1 Pack of Crayola Crayons ( pack of minimum 16 crayons )
* Home Internet Connection
* Pushdown lid water bottle (screw cap opening)

Please label the water bottle only .
Some classes group their supplies, so please do not label.

-----------------------------------------------------------
This is the second time I got my logic beaten at ASD! Are there further catches to sending our kids to ASD? It may be a time re-visit our decision.

Is there a way to address this issue?

They do it because most of the schools in America do it. Interestingly though, NOT usually the ones you have to pay for privately.

As a parent with two children at ASD, I'm familiar with the supplies required. Keep in mind that ASD is one of the few non-sponsored schools in Qatar; tuition must pay all of the costs involved with running the school. Rather than comparing it to other schools in Doha (which do NOT have an American curriculum, and which is presumably what you want), compare it to similar schools worldwide. Friends with children at the Shanghai American School pay $19,000 per yer per child. Islamabad is around $15,000, as is the International School of Kenya. One reason for these seemingly outlandish tuitions is that rarely do people pay their own - it's usually a benefit in one's contract. Very few parents at ASD pay their own bills - their companies do. If you are one of the unlucky few who do pay it yourself, please know that there is a charitable foundation connected with the school to help those with need meet the costs.

Incidently, it is not true that if a child is denied admission, the application fee is retained. It is refunded.

This is not a conspiracy HumanBeing...I do not respresent ASD, I do not work for ASD and in fact, I have no children going to ASD either.

My only point was this; before you complain HERE why not complain to ASD!

I concluded you had NOT because you made no mention of talking to anyone from ASD about your complaints. While you may not get anything changed or get the answer you desire, they will have AN explanation for you, one way or the other.

I am a Human Being. Common Sense come from Common People. I believe in People Power.

By the way - Beauty of Drupal - I can easily track you back. You do represent ASD un-officially to change public opinion.

By scmasse• 30 Aug 2007 17:59
scmasse

LOL, I represent common sense...if you want to get something accomplished, take your complaints to people who have the power to change it...not to a forum.

By HumanBeing• 30 Aug 2007 01:20
HumanBeing

Do you represent ASD?

Why are you so upset about bring this subject to the public forum?

All what they are asking for is clearly mentioned on their website. It must be a practice since long.

I am just new to it.

Why don't you talk to the Admin and find a rectification of this and many other ethical mistake?

By scmasse• 30 Aug 2007 00:19
scmasse

Only if the baby is crying to the right person....

Take up your grievances with the school itself, not on a public forum. Nowhere in this post have you mentioned speaking with ANY admin on the subject.

Money is not the focus I think. It’s a matter of principle, desipline, and ethics. After all this is at least one of the reasons - if not major - we seek education. What better schooling or education means?

All I am saying is, your "information" (complaining) makes no difference...for all your complaining there are still 20+ people who would gladly take your place.

Some of you have raised much serious issues with the school. Is there any way to raise this subject in US or US officials in Qatar?

It’s not just a few pennies here and there; it’s a pound plus.

By scmasse• 28 Aug 2007 18:16

By all means, pull your children out...Since I have heard all the stories of how hard it is to get a slot in ANY of the schools in Doha right now, I won't hold my breath.

What's the use in complaining if you plan to do nothing about it?

Obviously somone in the ASD management has some business intrest in the marketing of Crayola & Faber Castell.

Reminds me of my Drawing teacher asking us students to bring a vegetable to class to practice "Reality Drawing". There were 50 students in the class. At the end of the class he would collect the items in a bag to be taken home.

Class A-50 Onions, Class B-50 Potatoe, Class C-50 Eggs, Class D-50 Cucumber, Class E-Brinjal...all in one day..!!!

We knew what he was doing so one day we all (all the classes together) planned to bring watermellon to school....The buger did not miss a single one, he called in a minivan to carry it all home. But the students had a nice laugh.

Just go and purchase half of the materials. If they ask you Why?, Just tell them I cant afford it. Simple as that.

And move on... What they are going to do?, At least you are a team player. Just test the waters and see for yourself, How afar you could swim.

I could understand the purpose, If the materials are for your kids only. After carefully reading the info at the web site;

My interpretation is: Armed Robbery without a label gun! and Sticky hand Joe ripping you off.

If they have parent and teachers meeting, just express your concern to them. You will be surprise who will concur with your concerns.

About the little trips is always a headache, specially when you don't have the money.

You could always do Home school tutoring, they got lots of info in the internet.

Remember they are in the business of making money by sacrificing quality and education a lot of times.

Hopefully that is not case. I doubt that.

most expensive school in Doha. Still acting like beggers after taking such a large amount of money from parents is unethical and criminal. Items listed above by HumanBeing would probably cost QR 100-150. I think DESS and otehr British Schools liek Park House etc. are much better since they seldom ask for any stationary items from children (infact they seldom ask for anything).

I think we should request Qatar Charity to help ASD so that they can cater for their huge unnecessary expenses.

ASD is one of the most expensive school in Doha. My son at DESS ... I as a parent never being asked to bring such item above. And if we do have to bring odd items here and there ... the school always asked to be marked with child's name (which is i think is a common sense).

I think it is ridiculous to have to supply the class with materials! 'Do not label'...that is so funny! If you are paying fees for a school then resources should be provided...this makes ASD sound like a poor US government school that have to ask the parents for practically everything.
