FIFA World Cup 2022: European qualifying draw as road to 2022 begins
The six continental federations of FIFA organize their own qualifying competitions for the FIFA World Cup. The largest international football tournament requires a qualification process to reduce a large number of countries from 211 to 32 for the FIFA World Cup.
Fifty-five European nations will compete in 10 groups as announced in the qualifying draw on Monday in Zurich. Qualifying matches will take place from March to November next year and the 10 group winners will make their way to the finals in Qatar automatically while the 10 group runner-ups will head to the playoffs as per the format.
The defending champions, France will face Andriy Shevchenko’s Ukraine. Harry Kane will face Robert Lewandowski as England and Poland are placed in the same group. Cristiano Ronaldo embarks on his last FIFA World Cup quest with Portugal in a seemingly straight forward group consisting of Serbia, Republic of Ireland, Azerbaijan, and Luxembourg. Current Asian champions, Qatar will join Group A - alongside Portugal, Serbia, Republic of Ireland, Luxembourg, and Azerbaijan, a press statement issued by Qatar Football Association on Tuesday said.
