FIFA World Cup Trophy returns to Qatar after global tour

A few days before the start of the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022™, the original FIFA World Cup Trophy arrived in Doha on Sunday morning, capping off a global tour that took it to more than 50 countries and regions. Following a tradition that began in 2006, the original World Cup trophy began a worldwide tour in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, in May. The tour will take the trophy to all of the countries that will be hosting games at the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022, as well as other locations.

Promoting the 32 teams that will compete for the trophy beginning next Sunday, the final game will be played at Lusail Stadium on Qatar's National Day, December 18.

From now until the final match of the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022™, the original FIFA World Cup Trophy will remain under the supervision of the Supreme Committee for Delivery and Legacy (SC) and FIFA. The winning team is allowed to temporarily keep the trophy, but only former champions and heads of state are allowed to touch the cup permanently.

To replace it, the winning team is presented with a gold-plated replica bearing the tournament's flag, the flags of the host countries, and the names of the players on the winning team. Meanwhile, FIFA has been given back the original gold trophy as required by regulations.

The current trophy was a winning design by Silvio Gazzaniga and produced by GDE Bertoni after FIFA launched an international competition for a new trophy after the 1970 World Cup. FIFA retains ownership of the trophy even after it is presented to the victorious team. The 6.142-kilogram gold trophy is made by skilled artisans. Its current design, which depicts two people holding the globe aloft, dates back to 1974.
