Racism ! Doha College

Now, alot of us coming from the western world disagree to few things that we think are just plain stupid. For example: Putting your nationality when applying for a job in Qatar or a picture. For the sole reason that your nationality or how you look doesn't determine how well you could work. Well, ok maybe to some extent I can understand why it's done here.

Nevertheless, I recently applied at DOHA COLLEGE and there was an online app form. It was bit of a shocker when I saw a of the question on it.

Whats your Ethinicity? : (It should be as simple as Native English Speaker, Non Native Speaker etc.)

But Instead, it asked:
White/British
Mixed White/African British
Mixed White/Asian British
Carribean British
Pakistani British
Indian British
Bengladeshi British
Other Ethnicity
I Don't Know(it was actually a choice)

There were a few more choices. lol. Believe me, check it out for yourself.

If a school, is hiring teachers some what based on that. Wouldn't our children be taught something similar.

I love my country Canada, therfor I take pride in being a Canadian. As well as every Canadian regardless of ethnicity are my people. Well done Canada, for not asking such ridiculous questions at your schools !!!

Doha College Disappointed. Or help me understand why?

or any other school, did you think that for just a minute they might have HAD to ask this question---that the Qatar Ministry of Education requires it?

Hey there I am so happy I found your web site, I really found you by accident, while I was browsing on Google for something else, Anyhow I am here now and would just like to say many thanks for a fantastic post and a all round interesting blog (I also love the theme/design), I don’t have time to read through it all at the minute but I have saved it and also included your RSS feeds, so when I have time I will be back to read a great deal more, Please do keep up the great b.

It'd be great if you could check out my website and give me a few pointers: dental insurance quotes, the website is for medical insurance for instance permanent dentures and even just click the next website

Sounds like the US census...

Look on the bright side, at least they didn't break it down to the drops of blood from different ethnic back grounds.. :)

Nothing i can comment on it brother.

Thats the way this system is engineered.

I'm not a grammar nazi. I suffer from tall poppy syndrome. I dismiss those who preach, assume and think they know what they are talking about. I am not prefickt.

By anonymous• 23 Sep 2012 23:58

maybe they ask this type of question to get your original background for certain positions and the questions by mistake applied to all the applicants in their system. even though the racism already there in the GCC regarding jobs.

I had a friend of mine holding Jordanian passport was working in a company with the same position and same performance(maybe) of the other person whos holding British passport. the British was getting 18,000 but the Jordanian was getting 10,000,,, when he found out he asked his direct manager straight away and the answer was he is British

Maybe we were nice to you (as we always are) because you were the guest and we were the host. This reflects a kiwi culture, but don't forget that NZ is made up of many nationalities and it is impossible to pigeon-hole a whole nation - where ever you go.

I am about to go to sleep, lying down in the bed and by elaborating further I run the certain risk of letting typos creep into the post. In the presence of someone like you, who has a pathological preoccupation with pinpointing typos to talk about it to diseased proportions, this risk is indeed a serious one.

Suffice it to say that most New Zealanders I have met are, on the very contrary, genteel, amicable, sociable, calm and polite people.

By anonymous• 23 Sep 2012 23:22
anonymous

NZ is very much a multicultural society. What 'stock' would a New Zealander come from or be. What makes up the identity of the average kiwi?

By anonymous• 23 Sep 2012 23:19
anonymous

Jack, NZ/British & British/British was supposed to be a joke, clearly lost on you. Your 'evidence' "(from UK government website)" does not apply to Qatar laws (where the school is located).

By anonymous• 23 Sep 2012 23:19

Please elaborate Segmund.

You are so untypical of your stock, do you know that? I have spent some time of my life in New Zealand and it would appear that the way you approach discussions on this forum in no way reflects anything kiwi about your person. :)

**********However, you don't have to give this information if you don't want to.**********

If the ethnicity question is mandatory then this definitely needs to be reported.

Jack9999 I must say you, explained it quite well. Some people go all crazy. What you have said seems quite reasonable with a positive attitude. It's all about understanding why these questions are being asked.

there is nothing called New Zealand/British. Its just commonwealth citizen.

I believe Doha College is under British Mgt. So the questions are posed to check Equal opportunities monitoring

Here's the answer for all your doubts (from UK government website)

******There is no law against collecting information on race and ethnicity when recruiting. Many organisations choose to in order to monitor the effectiveness of their equal opportunities policy. However, you don't have to give this information if you don't want to.

An employer also mustn't treat you differently because of your sex, race, disability, age, sexual orientation or religion.********

I am British Asian and every employer in UK hands out this form and I dont see anything racist in it.

My language or grammar skills has nothing to do with asking with the school asking such racial questions. Lets say I'm a math teacher, would that require as much grammar skills?

By anonymous• 23 Sep 2012 22:50
anonymous

Ace, if Canada started asking those questions their population would now be the same that it was 30 years ago. Things are way different there, and they have an active selective immigration system in place.

It's like orange to apples, Qatar is a different animal in this regard.

By ace23• 23 Sep 2012 22:45

Firstly, I'd like to say. This is just a forum. I not here applying for a job or writing an essay. As you have criticized my sentencce structure. As a matter of fact I didnt even bother looking twice. Which I should have, if certain individuals like yourself are reading it.lol. And yes, it was personal.

Anyway though, the argument or forum wasn't based on wether they have good teachers or not but rather the question they have asked when applying for a job.

By anonymous• 23 Sep 2012 22:40
anonymous

What's more alarming is that there does not seem to be:

British/British

or

New Zealand/British

Rascism here in GCC like food and water, they can't live without it

Even your salary Packge depend on your race, they will make health care system for Qataries only from now on (project already started for that) even in sickness someone will get medical care and the other one will not because Qataries are more human then us and they will go to paradise because they are Qataries.

No in Canada it is illegal to ask questions ablout ethnicity or request a photo before offering employment. I am assuming the OPs poor language and grammar skills used in the post are a result of stress rather than lack of critical qualifications to teach.

I agree with your sentiments. We need qualified and able teachers for our children. However, I personaly do not see the need to address the ethnicity aspect at initial application.

By anonymous• 23 Sep 2012 22:22
anonymous

Teachers' accents have a large influence on students' accents. Maybe this is why. Parents want to know. Personally, I care not if my children have different accents to mine, but the standard of education must be the same across the board (within the school).

I love Canada. Let's just make that clear so that I can not be accused of being a Canadianist.

Your grammar and sentence structure is shocking. I would have serious reservations in letting my kids be in your class if that is the standard of English you would be teaching.

Nothing personal, but I suspect Doha Collage needs these safety features in place not only for prospective teacher accents, but for teachers whose English skills need improving.

Doha College has a (deservedly) very good reputation among the expat community, and we expect the very best from its teachers. I know two people who send there kids there and a teacher from the school as well.

If you are the right person for the job, you will be in with a chance to be hired. Complaining about the initial paperwork is more of an insight into your character than the school's standards.

All the best.

They are using a standard UK "boilerplate" - to ask those questions albeit though tickbox is pretty much standard "best" practise in the UK - apart from that, their school, their rules!!

in the first place , you guys are yourself a racist . and secondly , you guys dont have any jobs in your country .. So when you are in a different place for a survival , dont complain .. you like it or dont like obey the rules over here ....
