Medical Exam on arrival in Doha

By shay

Hi

I have been told by my employer we all have to have a medical exam prior to commencing employment in Doha.....what does this involve - does anyone know?

I have been told I can have mine the day I arrive and then start work 2 days after

I am interested to know what exactly they test for!

Anyone know? Is this a usual thing in Qatar?

Thanks

S

A friend of mine was blind in his left eye and he was obviously blind in that eye.

At the driving eye test, he read the first letters by covering his left eye with his left hand. When they said "now the other eye", he covered the same eye with his right hand. Came out with results showing perfect vision.

I kid you not!

My employer sent my medical test results to the CMO. How long does it normally take before I get the clearance?

Do they take urine tests too?

Jolene, unless things have changed drastically, the medicals are free and undertaken by the state health service

Can anyone help? I'm guessing most of you have had these exams before you started employment.

I have these medical tests to look forward to on my arrival and I was wondering how much it is going to cost me?

As I have to budget very carefully in my first month.

*ONLY 11 DAYS TO GO UNTIL I ARRIVE*

You could drink some fruit juices at a juice stall and you could make sure that you cover up. You could drink your fruit juice in a separate area from where women drink their fruit juice. Enjoy!

Well some employers will not give you a second chance when the result says you have TB. But if you can get aletter from your sponsor that you are needed, then you can have a second test after undergoing treatment for TB.

Will they reject someone for tuberculose or Hepetitis or only for HIV, I read that hepetitis B is epidemic in Qatar, so one more or less ?

I am not a fun of forums but i enjoy going through what people say and i rarely comment. One thing I am sure of, the authorities here are aware of many flaws in their procedures but they are just keeping quiet. Its like a one eyed man who allows people to joke around the bad eye, but when people joke around the good eye, they're trapped. they cry for justice but its too late.

Most people in arab countries are good people, therefore bad people have no place. You can fool people sometimes but you can't fool all the people all the time. So Dendline, be good when you come and learn the bad things after sometime.

Welcome to Doha.

If you don't smoke in this country you are the oddball. I still can't stand that every time I go out of the house I have to plan on coming home reeking of cigarette smoke.

Although they have laws about smoking in public buildings and many restaurants ban smoking, it is just another unenforced law which was enacted for no reason.

As for your test unless you have active TB or severe lung cancer with lesions then you will have no problems with medical. That, like the eye test, is pretty much a joke by any western standard.

I believe they also check for Hepetitus (spelling may leave something to be desired).

The eye test for a driving licence is funny.

A friend of mine who was totally blind in his left eye took the test and came out with a chit saying he had perfect vision.

He covered his blind eye up with his left hand and when they said cover the other eye up, he covered the same eye with the other hand.

There is a book called "If the sun doesn't kill you, the washing machine will" I cannot remember who wrote it but it was a guy who worked at the old booze syndicate (The house on the hill) when booze was cheap (pre Qatar Airways days). There is a chapter dedicated to the driving test that was serialised in the "Independent".

PS The book wasn't and, as far I am aware, is still not available in Qatar

For most serious employers, not to mention QP, the first test is carried out in your home country before you arrive in Doha.

The results are then sent to Doha to be examined, accepted or rejected. If accepted, a visa + air ticket etc. are issued for you. If rejected, you don't leave home.

The second tests in Doha, are supposed to be necessary to compare the validity of results of the first tests.

The eye test is soooo funny.

You wait in a room which feels like you are awaiting your worst dental treatment ever, then your are called in where there is another queue. You then take your turn to read from each eye no more than 3 or 4 letters at the most.....your certificate is stamped & you almost have a driving license. You then go downstairs to queue again, then pay for the license job done!

Oh yes, have had lots of eye tests - just Deano's comment above saying it is really funny got me curious... :)

have you had an eye test before for a drivers licence? or an eye test at all? - it is easy...I would assume it is the same in all countries....

I have no diseases!!!! ha! Do they do drug tests, do they test for cancer? Again, dont get me wrong - I have nothing to worry about - I am a just a curious person thats all!!

Don't worry!!!!

If you have no diseases, you have nothing to worry about. To be honest the medical procedure is a bit of a joke. Blood test is quick, X-Ray is quick & i'm note sure that by standing in a line by the door near the machine is best practice & safe, but there you go. Lastly, the doctor listens to your heart & all finished minus the queueing within 10 minutes.

As for the eye test, for a driving license.........that is real funny!!!!!!!!!

Yup, it stressed me a little, besides I had just discovered that I was pregant, which made it even more stressful!

I don't work since I arrived to Doha, I just look after my baby. Very nice and relaxing, but very bored when my baby sleeps!

Good luck on your move!

Butterfly - wow - I bet that stressed you out!! I have had a blood test before and know the feeling of waiting anxiously for the results! Its not nice...

What do you do Butterfly - how long have you been in Doha etc?

By butterfly• 9 Mar 2006 10:19

I was so worried when I had my test! In the past I have done volunteering work with babies and children sick with AIDS, you know, changing nappies, cleaning bruises and drying tears :)

Of course you know that you cannot possibly get infected if precautions are taken, and it never bothered me before, but I got worried anyway when we came here, couldn't help it!

By shay• 9 Mar 2006 10:07
shay

Cool - thanks for your help everybody - I dont have anything to worry about - I am just curious as to the process and reasoning behind it!!!! Besides I hate blood tests - but ya get that!!!

Cheers

Perhaps because they want them done by their own doctors? As opposed to trusting some random piece of paper that they think could be forged....? Dunno....

You just get a Visa from your employer...they then get you a residence permit ("iqamah") that goes into your passport (it takes a whole page and contains an ID number).

I knew someone who didn't "pass" the test. He had tb, I think...

He was sent back home and of course, didn't get the job. Your contract will say that the job will be terminated if you don't succesfully pass the health check.

It is scary, but try not to think about it too much. Or get yourself checked in Australia before hand for your peace of mind.

By shay• 9 Mar 2006 09:58

Hi Qatari, thats what I dont understand - why dont they make you do the tests before you leave your own country? Dont I have have to have a resident permit with my visa before I leave to come to Doha?

By Loki• 9 Mar 2006 09:57
Loki

I guess so... but don't really know much about it, sorry... don't know what would happen if a test came back positive - I can only assume that there would be some implication for the residency/work permit...

Also they want "healthy" workers...

The quicker you get these tests done, the better since they are required in order for your residence permits, etc. to be processed.

Thank you Loki thats very interesting....do they test for stds cause they are worried about people bringing those diseases into the country?

Shay - yes, it's usual, and it's no big deal... a blood test, an xray, and a blood-typing... that's about it....

Then, of course, there's the full-palm fingerprinting (well, OK, it's really only the fingers, but they tend to be a bit careless and messy... :) )

ETA: But no, sorry - don't know exactly what they test for, but definitely HIV & Hepatitis...
