Finding work for Brit in Qatar
Hi, hopefully someone on here can help me out with some advise. My parter has been offered a job in Qatar And we are planning to move out there. Now I am trying to find work for myself, I am a qualified electricain over here in the UK, however when I look for jobs for electricians in Qatar they are mostly looking for phillipino workers and don’t pay well. I was wondering if anyone knows if there is any kind of demand for British electricians or if any other type of work that would be suitable.

Mary Catherine is absolutely wrong in stating that Asians are "poorly trained." She has little or no idea of how many Asians are working in Doha and in ME countries with many of them being well- qualified in their field of work. Asians form the backbone of the workforce in the ME and this has been the case for several decades now. No government or company or owners would take the risks of allowing unqualified, poorly-trained people to handle the construction or operation of their multi-billion riyal projects or plants. Just as an example to Ms Catherine, in 1986 a new, major gas production plant in Jubail S Arabia came into operation. It had 80% workers from Asia and 18% Saudis managing its operations and maintenance. The plant had just three British engineers with one of them getting kicked out at the time of renewal of his first contract due to his under-the-table dealings with contractors and suppliers.
Mary is right in saying that Asians get poorly paid compared to westerners for the same jobs. The major reason for this being Asian workers "accept" terms of contract offered to them while western workers "dictate" terms of contract offered to them. Asian workers come from countries where the costs of living are low and the job situation is very tight. As such, they are "accept" whatever is being offered. On the contrary, western workers come here on "their own terms."
Agreeing with Mary Catherine, I suggest you try to make the best of the opportunities coming your way in your own country. You may find it difficult here to get the salary you want should you be able to find a job with your qualification and in your line of work.
Asians are professionally qualified people and know their jobs. Just compare the English in your post to that of mine. And English is your n-a-t-i-v-e language! Do you feel I am a qualified person?
I am from Asia!
Unfortunately professionally qualified trade jobs are nearly always filled by poorly trained and paid Asians. You will find it extremely difficult to find something in your field. Also, if you are not married, you will need a sponsor. Women can only sponsor their spouses on a family visa for certain salaries and job positions. Living with someone you are not married to is considered adultery and is a crime here. Do people do it? Yes, but there are serious consequences if you get caught or more likely, someone gets angry with you and decides to dob you in.
There are a couple of independent businesses where professional trades people are offering their services but I can't be more specific as my experience here has solely been with my landlord provided repairmen.
