Hi everyone...

I am planning to move to qatar next month. Can anybody tell me what is the system for a newcomer on "Driving License"? Is it that one has to pass a rigorous driving test and then he is ussied a drving license for a fee even though he possesses a driving license of his home country?

Hi, I just moved from Abu Dhabi to Doha. I have a driver's license from AD. I am an American citizen. How long can I drive a rental car using the Adu Dhabi DL in Doha? They are processing my Resident Permit. Am I allowed to use my Abu Dhabi DL till my RP comes through? If not, can I convert my Abu Dhabi DL to a temporary driver's license? Thanks!

You have the ff. options:

- take direct test without training

- take short course/half course

Since he is on visit visa, pls. complete the ff. reqts: eye test , copy of passport with arrival stamp, visa copy and license copy. Once u complete the reqts. go to Traffic Dept. to submit the said reqts. Ask for the direct test sched. But if u will go for the courses, complete the reqts. , ask approval fr Traffic Dept to take the course and submit all documents to the school for registration.

Iam not sure whther u can change the license or get one instantly based on ur pakistani license

i think u can either take 12 days class or go for direct test by paying 150.00 Qr ( u get three chance)

If u failed all three, u would need to take Driving Class

They don't actually take your other license with you. I applied for a Qatar Driving License using my Philippine Driving License and after all the processing they gave back my Philippine license. So you will not lose your EU License.

I have an Austrian driving license (i.e. EU) and understand it is relatively easy to get a Qatari one based on this. However, I was wondering whether I'd actually have to surrender my current license or I will be able to keep my Austrian one too. I wouldn't want to lose my EU license.

Hello.

I know this is an old thread, but here is some updated info if anyone is applying for a license in 2009. Marhaba and other publications are a bit out of touch, and I made my application today...

The fee seems to be QAR250 now to switch a valid country license (like UK) to a Qatar license. (Either that or even the authorities are taking a dip into the ex-pat pocket). The process only takes ten minutes and you will get your card immediately. You will have to provide a signed/stamped etc eye test from the hospital (you'll need your ID and a photo to take the eye test), and then at the traffic place; another photo, country license and Qatar ID, a copy of country license and Qatar ID (front and back) and some papers from work (a no objection letter and sometimes they will complete you application too - they did for me).

Good luck anyone braving the roads out here...

Hi every one, My husband is working in Doha at the moment and he would like to apply for the Qatari Driving license as soon as possible. He has Sri Lankan Driving License and according to his company he needs a letter signed from the company sponsor but unfortunately his sponsor is out of the country for few months. Does he still needs to get the sponsor letter together with the eye test and driving test or only eye test and driving test would be sufficient.

Can any one comment on this please.

Thanks..

Jail, stiff fine for driving without a valid licence

Published: Sunday, 26 August, 2007, 12:10 AM Doha Time

By Nour Abuzant

ANY motorist convicted of driving a vehicle without a valid licence could be sentenced to a jail term ranging from a month to three years and a fine from QR10,000 to QR50,000, or one of them, the new traffic law says.

The yet to be enforced law says that if a motorist "repeats" the same offence and is convicted by a court, the offender would be sentenced to imprisonment and a fine, both of which could not be suspended or waived.

The jail term, in this case, can range between a week and three years and the fine from QR20,000 to QR50,000.

The law defines "repetition" as committing a similar crime within a year from the day of serving the punishment for the first violation.

In all cases of repeated convictions, the minimum penalty would be the double of the previous punishment.

Driving without a licence is one of the violations which cannot be settled by paying fines. This offence is automatically referred to a court of law.

Citizens of GCC countries who hold valid driving licences issued in their countries can drive on Qatar's roads. If their licences expires during their stay in Qatar, they can be substituted by licences issued locally.

Visitors and tourists of all nationalities, holding valid driving licences issued in their countries can drive in Qatar provided they get the approval from Qatar's traffic authorities within 15 days of their entry into the country.

ACCORDING TO THE NEW LAW, HOLDERS OF VALID INTERNATIONAL LICENSES CAN DRIVE VEHICLES IN QATAR FOR ANY PERIOD WITHOUT BEING SUBJECT TO FURTHER PROCEDURES. The old law gave them only six months and they needed special permission to drive beyond this period. According to the amended new traffic law, which was issued on August 6 but is yet to come into force, insurance companies cannot refuse applications for third-party insurance. If they do, they would be liable to a fine of QR10,000.

The penalty will be doubled if the same company refuses to accept another application for third-party insurance within the next six months after the first conviction.

Judge not! that you be not judged!

DO YOU NEED A DRIVING LICENSE?

Do you have a currently valid license from your own country?

If so, we can provide a 3-year International Driving License.

Issued in the USA.

Valid for Europe, Asia, the Americas and all the Gulf.

You just need to provide:

Your original valid license from your home country,

A passport sized photo, some personal data.

In a week or so we will get you an International Driving License

that is valid for 3 years, delivered by DHL.

Worth trying! you have to go to the traffic police to find out if they accept it. otherwise, you may have to do their test. But I'm sure you can pass it, as you already pass the British test so! it should be alright!

I had a omani license and no rp as it was taking time, I went to traffic department and they gave me a temp license after eye test and said once you get rp we will convert that into permenant license.

As far as I know and I might be wrong if you come to qatar on residence visa you can only drive for 7 days before converting your license into qatari (temp)

visit visa is another story

first of all you have to get your residence permit, afterwhich you can apply for a qatar driving license. if you already have a driving license from your country, take note that most of the western countries they will just convert it. no need for you to take up the test or go to a driving school. if your license is from asia, it depends, but most of the asian license you have to undergo a driving test (signal, L and pocket parking, road test) or the traffice department will suggest on your application form to go to a driving school for two weeks. hope this helps

I am not sure about people from the UK asthey are driving on the left hand side of the road. However, there are other ex-pats here who are driving they will probably know about it. I converted mine from the UAE as I can't find my European license and that went no bother at all.

Hi Folks,

I am starting work in Doha in August and I was wondering if anyone knows if it is possible to transfer my UAE license to a Qatar one? My Canadian license has long since expired, but I have been on my UAE license for the past 5 years. I would rather not deal with the hassle of redoing my Canada license this summer, but I bet it would be simpler than doing the Qatari driving exam!

Anyone have any experience with this?

Cheers!

I think it depends on where your original drivers license is from. I think people from the States, UK, South Africa, Canada and probably others can just convert there old licenses to a local Qatar driving license. You just need to do an eye test...
