This is a dream job - being at the soon (no, really) to be launched new English news channel, AlJazeera International. I'm just wondering if there is anyone else out there who is working at AlJazeera? I'd love to connect here and find out what your experience has been so far... Even though we aren't on air yet, I'm still so so so so excited about helping launch a new news channel! This is really a once in a lifetime opportunity...

For those of you who don't know about AlJazeera yet, here is a little preview

Hi All,

I just arrived here in Doha three weeks ago to study AJI (for a possible Masters Degree equivalent) and would love to get in contact with people working for the station.

It seems that the major contact (and advisor) I did have, is no longer working there and neglected to tell me before my arrival in Doha.

Would love any help or advice you can give, either anonymously or personally.

Rather Anxious,

JK

Hi Renee,

I'm starting to feel like I'm in your position!

I signed a contract via email with Al Jazeera a little over a month ago and I'm still waiting to hear from them regarding a start date and travel arrangements. (I live in the UK) They told me a work permit would only take 15 days to process, so I'm a little concerned by the delay. I've contacted them and they told me it's being processed. Of course, I'm worried that will also withdraw their offer; if they plan to do that I wish they would do that now rather than later so I can get on with my life. I haven't been earning for two months now, which is annoying. Anyhow, good luck to all of us.

My husband and I came to Doha in February after he was offered a position at Al Jazeera. I was offered a position in May, with a formal offer and starting date. With HR being so disorganised they have taken 3 months to get back to me, only to say that the offer has been reneged. Their justification being the company does not allow the husband and wife to work for the company. (Even if their not working directly together.) This has been our experience with Al Jazeera. We are not the only ones this has happened to. So beware of accepting a contract to work for Al Jazeera especially if you're currently residing outside of Qatar as there are very few opportunities to work in Qatar (unless you're in the oil/gas industry). I give this advice because like you I was thrilled at the idea of Al Jazeera but my experience and that of others around me has been a bitter one.

hi nelli i am very much surprised, why do u want to throw away teh oppurtunity to be a doctor?i had one freind frm lebonon who came all the way to india just to become a doc and he struggled with the language and finally we were so hapy that he made it inspite of having a tough time with culture language etc. so think again and dont be in a haste to leave your medical college.

I am all for both sides of an issue being discussed, but anyone that thinks there will be a free press in this or most other parts of the world, has their head in the sand.

You may not like the US press but it does have more freedom than other places to publish or comment on the government or its' leaders. You can't say the same for Qatar.

Jane, are you aware of any vacancies NOT posted on their website, for a Canadian wife who is bored out of her mind while I am off at work all day? She doesn't speak Arabic though...

HI Jane and thank you for the contribution. I am also trill by the fact that AlJazeera is been launch in English. I believe working for Aljazeera is not only a job it is a contribution for the whole world. Images, news, reports; touch many people and is such an important job especially in the time we are living. My husband works for them and even thought I don't have any contribution to the channel and I complain about all the crazy hours he works (you know what I mean) I am proud that he is doing something so meaningful and important for everyone.

It's an overall positive experience working in Qatar.

There are many posts about life in Qatar and working here. You'll find that many of us like it. Be prepared to forego things like theaters, art galleries and museums.

The shopping is so so, movies are generally current and the beaches and desert are great. If you hook up with good company you'll find it can be very enjoyable.

I work for Aljazeera (formerly Arabic), it's really exciting to have an English voice.

I've a blog discussing some Mid East issues - i would be delighted if you can check it out and let me know what you think.

There is not much known in the US about the troubles that exist in the Middle east and other places besides what friends in the armed services who got stationed in Iraq tell. And then, the stories they bring back are so full of military propaganda that the opinions are jaded. I am so happy to see that there will be an arabic voice in the world news venue. To have it come from a source that is not afraid to show what the bombs do to the innocent and how much suffering goes on that most western new won't show is refreshing. US television only tells half the story and that half is censored under the guise of not offending the viewers as well as the ever present "National Security" guise. So hoorah for the truth. Hoorah for it coming to Doha. Just hoorah!!
