How to navigate your first day at work
First things first - congratulations on landing that job!
We know that starting a new job can be tricky at the best of times, and even more so during this increased period of uncertainty with so many changes happening in the workplace and in people’s relationships. Do you shake hands with your colleagues upon meeting them? Do you maintain a respectable social distance that has become the norm the past year?
Feeling nervous is absolutely normal, but preparing yourself can go some way to settling those anxiety butterflies. We’ve spoken to a few productivity experts and rounded up some tips that may help you navigate your first day at your new job.
1 - Dress to impress
Preparing what to wear ahead of time will help keep the nerves at bay and reduce the morning stress as you get ready. Research also suggests that making decisions helps give us a sense of control over our lives and reduces overwhelming feelings of anxiety.
2 - Arrive early
No one ever plans to arrive late on their first day of work, but fate doesn’t always smile our way. Take your precautions, set multiple alarms and plan your route. Aim to arrive 15 minutes early, but wait in a nearby cafe until it’s the agreed time. This will give you time to settle your nerves and avoid you entering flushed and bothered.
3 - Soak in your surroundings
Listen and learn. There will be a lot of information thrown your way on the first day, don’t try to do everything at once or memorise everything at the same time. Instead, it’s the perfect time to observe and learn more about the company’s dynamics. Stay neutral in discussions and avoid being dragged into existing power struggles or office gossip!
4 - Pay attention to your body language
Body language plays a big role in communication and what we don’t say can sometimes be louder than what we do. Fake it till you make it is a good motto to go by, and by paying attention to your body cues you can better understand how others perceive you.
5 - Don’t take lunch
Ok hear us out - bonding over food is one of the best ways to break the ice. Try to keep your lunch slot open, go out with your colleagues for lunch if possible or grab a coffee together.
6 - Be friendly
And finally, keep a smile on your face. Relax, enjoy the new experience and be courteous to everyone. This is a great opportunity for you, and be sure to enjoy it.
