“I just got fired! What next?”
By : Fazmina Samat
If you’ve just found out that you’ve been left out, here are some steps to consider.
Stay calm
No matter the circumstances, it’s important to part ways with your company in a professional way. Keeping your calm shows a positive impression on your supervisor and colleagues. This might be important later if you need a reference or letter of recommendation.
Understand ‘why’
Knowing the reason behind your termination is crucial for planning your next move. Was the reason for termination due to performance issues, breaking of policy, or was it a result of company layoffs? Understanding this can help you guide your expectations and next steps you need to take.
Review your benefits and compensation
The reason for your termination can influence your compensation if its applicable. Your eligibility for severance pay, extended medical insurance or such other benefits will be reviewed. If required, consult with an employment attorney to make sure you are fully aware of your rights and options.
Request for references
If you’re leaving on a good note, ask your manager for a reference letter before you go. Having a positive reference from your previous employer can be valuable when you’re job hunting.
Know your rights
Read through your employment contract to learn about your rights. If you think you’re termination was unfair or it has violated your rights, you can resort to getting legal advice.
Update your resume and social media
Make sure your CV has your most recent experience and skills. Also, make sure your social media profile represents you in a professional manner, as many employers check online presence when considering candidates.
Consider a temporary job
Taking on a temporary job can help you to stay financially able while you can build on new skills and expand your professional network. Take this time to invest in your professional development through various courses.
