WATCH: Prominent People in Qatar - HE Sheikh Joaan bin Hamad Al Thani
In the latest edition of our Prominent People in Qatar series, we feature His Excellency Sheikh Joaan bin Hamad Al Thani, who is not only one of Qatar's most accomplished individuals but also a passionate leader determined to diversify Qatar's sporting capabilities.
HE Sheikh Joaan leads Team Qatar and has been the president of the Qatar Olympic Committee (QOC) since 2015 when he picked up the baton from his brother HE the Amir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani.
Sheikh Joaan is the fifth son of HE the Father Amir. He has played an instrumental role in ensuring Qatar's representation at major sports events across the globe.
Earlier this year, Sheikh Joaan participated in the first Arab-German Sports Summit in Berlin where he highlighted Qatar's sporting accomplishments and reiterated Qatar's commitment to developing and advancing sports across all fronts.
Sheikh Joaan graduated from the École spéciale Militaire de Saint-Cyr in France.
When Qatar hosted the Asian Games in 2006, Sheikh Joaan served as the torch relay ambassador for the first major international event in the country.
He has also served as the president of the Organising Committee of the 24th Men's Handball World Championship Qatar 2015.
Sheikh Joaan also has a keen interest in equestrian sports and has chaired Chi Al Shaqab, the first and only equestrian event of its kind in the Middle East and Asia region.
