In Qatar, these are a few of our favourite places to visit!
Whether you are transiting through Doha or are a permanent resident of Qatar, there is always something for everyone to see.
Qatar Living takes a look at some of the country’s most important and iconic places/landmarks to visit.
How many of these places have you been to?
1. Museum of Islamic Art
Located along the Doha Corniche, the museum is an architectural gem. It houses masterpieces of Islamic art, including metalwork, ceramics, jewelry, textiles and glass, dating between seventh and 19th centuries. The entry to the museum is free of cost.
2. Souq Waqif
It is a throwback to Qatar’s olden times when people used to visit little, traditional shops to buy their wares. Though the buildings are newly built, special care has been taken to make it look antique. Shop for everything from traditional dresses to spices. Entry is free.
3. Doha Corniche
The Doha Corniche is a huge stretch of stone-paved, manmade pathway along the sea front. Lying in a great semicircle, it is filled with greenery on the side. A favourite haunt for the health-conscious, it also provides spectacular photo backdrops as well.
4. Aspire Park
Spread over several hectares of land, it is a green paradise next to the iconic Khalifa International Stadium. It houses two large ponds, kilometres-long cycling and walking paths and several large play areas for children. It is a perfect spot for that family picnic.
5. Katara Cultural Village
Located next to the West Bay Area, this is a place where arts and crafts take centre-stage. It has a large amphitheater, sea-side lounges, sheesha joints, traditional restaurants as well as several art galleries. Visit Katara for some truly spectacular photo opportunities.
6. State Grand Mosque
It is located right next to the Qatar Sports Club and is the biggest place of worship in the country. It is exquisitely made and the best time to visit it is during the evenings. There are special entrances for women and children.
7. Al Shahaniya Camel Race Track
Though the track itself is nothing unique, it transforms itself into an area of intense activity once camel racing season starts. Some of the world’s most expensive race camels compete here and is a sight to behold. On the downside, getting information about camel races can be difficult.
8. Falcon Souq
Located next to the Souq Waqif, it gives a glimpse into the country’s storied past with the royal birds. Falcons as well as accessories to help rear it can be brought. However, many of the dealers do not speak English and it could limit one’s experience.
9. Al Zubara Fort
Located at Madinat Al Shamal, it is at one of the farthest points of the country. While it can be difficult to reach, once you do, you will be gifted with a blast into the past. Some of the country’s most famous archeological dig sites lies here.
10. Al Shamal Stadium
This unique football stadium is the only one in the world that is shaped like a fort. Built of red bricks imported from India’s Rajasthan state, it has retractable lighting system atop the four ramparts. It is a great place to go with visiting family and friends.
11. The Pearl Qatar
It is Qatar’s premium address for shopping and living. It boasts of several high-end shops as well as water front properties. It boasts of several restaurants and a one-of-its-kind marina for superyachts in the country. It is a must visit place for travellers.
12. Sheikh Faisal Bin Qassim Al Thani Museum
Located a little distance off Doha, this private museum isn’t the easiest place to find. But once you do, you will be treated to everything from Islamic artefacts and historical photographs to aeroplanes and a stunning old car collection. You can easily wander around for half a day.
13. Fanar - Qatar Islamic Cultural Center
One of the most recognisable buildings along the Doha Corniche, the centre provides classes in Islam for both men and women. It features a large mosque which has sermons conducted in English. People wishing to know more about Islam can take classes here. The winding minaret is a sight to behold.
14. Khor Al Udeid
This area, lying far off the main city, features one of the best beaches in Qatar and it can be combined with a visit to the desert. You can dune bash on a 4x4 car or even rent a quad jeep or bike. This place is for the adventurous at heart.
15. Mathaf Arab Museum of Modern Art
Located within the Education City, it is a place where some of the most prominent names in modern Arab art display their works. There are curated shows happening there around the year and is a great place to visit for art lovers. Free shuttle buses are available from the Museum of Islamic Arts and back every hour.
16. Aqua Park
A relatively new destination, the Aqua Park is situated a little outside Doha. It has a few great rides and has special ‘women and children only’ days. It is relatively safe and a welcome break from the country’s hot and humid conditions.
