Local Dates Festival 2020 gets underway at Al Meera

One of the most-awaited festivals in the country has returned with its fifth edition!
Fans of local dates can rejoice as the Local Dates Festival 2020 has officially begun at Al Meera branches across Qatar.
The kick-off event took place yesterday at Al Meera's Hayat Plaza branch, in the presence of high-level officials from the Ministry of Municipality and Environment's (MME) Agriculture and Fisheries Affairs Departments as well as Al Meera.
The festival is usually held in Souq Waqif. However, this year it is being hosted by Al Meera at its branches in 54 locations across Qatar.
With the participation of more than 100 local farms, the festival will offer an array of local dates including the locally produced Rutab. These will be available to customers under a special promotion by Al Meera.
The local Rutab is characterized by distinct production and marketing capabilities that contribute to its freshness and high quality, which makes it a preferred choice by many.
The festival will also include various kinds of home-grown dates like Al-Barhi, Shishi, Ikhlas and others.

Yousuf Khalid Al-Khulaifi, Director of the Agricultural Affairs Department at MME, said, "The Local Dates Festival lies within the ministry’s framework in improving the visibility of Qatari products in the local market. The ministry holds the marketing of local produce as a priority that can significantly aid in improving the quality of local agricultural production whilst reducing waste, to achieve an overall increase in demand."
"The combined efforts are aimed at motivating the local farm owners to increase production and improve quality using modern technology," he said.
The Local Dates Festival will run until the target stock of 300 tonnes of local dates lasts.
