Handy tips to follow when buying second hand furniture

Most expats tend to go for second hand furniture. While many places, individuals and even our own classifieds section has a whole load of second hand furniture for sale, selecting the right one can be a tedious task.

Here are some tips that you could follow when looking for the perfect piece of second hand furniture.

1- Try out the furniture before you pay for it.

Sit on the couch, lean on the table, open the drawers of the cupboard and ‘sample’ the furniture before you exchange money.

2- Second hand furniture has already lived a life with another family. Hence, follow your instincts before you go for the attractive price tag. Get to know whether the past owner had pets and check for pet and smoking odours, for after all a piece of furniture adds a lot to your home and family.

3- Whatever you buy second hand, never go for a second hand mattress.

An already used mattress can harbour a lot of germs, parasites, bed bugs etc. Hence, it’s always better to invest in a brand new mattress.

4- Remember hard wood furniture will last longer than the soft woods.

5- Metal furniture always make the best second hand. A new coat of paint can immediately make it good as brand new!

6- When buying kids furniture second hand, always check carefully for damages and broken parts that wouldn’t be fixed properly.

7- Always be on the lookout for a good piece of second hand furniture. An expat leaving the country urgently would want to get rid of the furniture as early as possible. So, keep your eyes peeled for the good pieces!
