Apple unveils iPhone SE, iPad Pro, CareKit and iOS 9.3
Apple, with its slightly bitten apple logo, is one of the most recognisable companies in the world today.
Hailed as technology leaders, they have introduced several popular devices including the iPhone and iPad.
At its Spring Event in the Town Hall Theater at its Cupertino HQ, Apple announced a host of new stars to its line-up. While some of it were expected, there were also a few surprises in store.
Here is a round-up of the major announcements made earlier in the day.
iPhone SE
After dappling with large screens, the iPhone SE goes back to its 5s days, with a phone that has a 4-inch display. In fact, it looks very similar to the 5s, except that the edges will now be in matte finish.
The phone will be available in four colours —space grey, silver, gold and rose gold.
However, the phone packs quite a punch inside. It boasts of an A9 processor and M9 motion co-processor that will give it as much speed as a 6s.
The camera will have a 12MP sensor and ability to capture 4K video. The front-facing flash capability has been retained from the earlier models.
American prices for the 16GB and 64GB models will be $399 and $499 respectively. While the phone will become available starting March 31, it will hit 100 countries by May.
iPad Pro
The successor to iPad Air 2 (introduced in October, 2014) is the smaller iPad Pro. It is a big upgrade. Except for the 9.7-inch display, everything else is new.
The new display boasts of 40 per cent less reflectivity. It’s 25 per cent brighter than iPad Air 2 and has a wider color gamut. At 500 nits of light, it’s the brightest iPad ever.
Night Shift, a new feature in iOS 9.3, will turn the display yellow-ish when the sun goes down. It also senses ambient light and adjust screen brightness accordingly.
The device features four speakers with big cavities for louder, better sound. It features a 12MP iPhone 6s camera that can shoot 4k video.
The iPad Pro also supports Apple Pencil. It comes in four colors — silver, black, gold and rose gold.
Starting at $599, it will be a bit more expensive than the entry-level iPad Air 2. But it comes with 32GB inbuilt memory. There are also 128GB ($749) and 256GB ($899) models available.
The device, which is being billed as the ‘future of computing,’ will start becoming available from early April.
Apple Watch
Apple has cut the price of its smart watch and also introduced an array of new bands in an attempt to spur more sales. The prices will start at $299, down from $349.
Apple also released a new type of wristband made of woven nylon, along with more colors for existing types of bands.
CareKit
CareKit is a new developer tool that will make it easier to build healthcare apps for iOS devices. The open-source platform, which will become available in April, should work like the toResearchKit.
With help from top medical institutions, CareKit can help individuals track treatment progress and communicate it to a physician or family members.
The platform can be used to monitor symptoms and keep tabs on a medication schedule. Other use cases include sharing photos of a wound or quantifying range of motion by using the iPhone’s accelerometer and gyroscope.
The first app created with CareKit will be tailored for people with Parkinson’s disease.
iOS 9.3
Apple’s iOS 9.3 will become available for download beginning today.
The free update is one of the biggest ‘dot’ releases yet.
Some features include passcode or TouchID protection for notes, new education features, top stories for Apple news, updates to the Apple Music and Maps apps in CarPlay and enhanced Health apps.
