Qatari-Chinese JV to build iconic Lusail Stadium for 2022 World Cup
The Lusail Stadium, which will host the opening and closing matches of the 2022 FIFA World Cup, now has a builder.
The Supreme Committee for Delivery & Legacy (SC) announced that Qatar’s HBK Contracting (HBK) and China Railway Construction Corporation Limited (CRCC) will build the stadium as a joint venture. Construction is expected to be completed by 2020.
Earlier this year, British architectural firm Foster + Partners had completed the 80,000-seat stadium’s schematic design.
“Lusail Stadium will be the centrepiece of our tournament in 2022, and post tournament will become an integral part of the community in Lusail City in the legacy phase. We look forward to revealing the Qatari-inspired design and detailed legacy plans to the people in Qatar and football fans across the world next year,” said SC Secretary General Hassan Al Thawadi.
After the event, the Lusail Stadium and its surrounding precinct will offer a variety of legacy uses to inhabitants of Lusail City. The stadium’s legacy concept will be presented alongside the Lusail Stadium design unveiling in 2017.
