Qatar handball team begin historic Olympic medal quest with win over Croatia
The Qatar handball team, making history by appearing at the quadrennial Olympic Games for the first time, started their medal quest with a convincing 30-23 win over Croatia. The victors led 15-8 at half-time.
The Qatar team, training under legendary Spanish coach Valero Rivera, started the game well and never once relinquished their hold on the game.
Zarko Markovic, who played a key role in Qatar’s march to IHF World Championship silver medal at home last year, was once again their best player. He scored 10 goals to make things safe for his side.
Rafael Capote, who scored six goals from eight tries, was the team’s second best scorer. Basel Moussa Reyes pitched in a useful five goals.
In their next outing, Qatar will play a grudge match against reigning world and Olympic champions France, on Tuesday.
