It took 36 years, but finally, Qatar has a silver medal at the Olympic stage.

Ace high jumper Mutaz Essa Barshim has made the country proud by claiming a second-place finish at the Rio Olympic Games. He cleared 2.36M on his first attempt to ensure himself a silver medal. Though he attempted to scale 2.38M, he failed all his three attempts.

Canadian Derek Drouin, who cleared 2.38M on his very first attempt, clinched gold while Ukraine’s Bohdan Bondarenko claimed bronze (2.33).

Twitter was buzzing with congratulatory messages.

Mutaz had also won bronze at the 2012 London Olympics. Mohammed Sulaiman (1,500M, Barcelona 1992), Said Saif Asaad (weightlifting, Sydney 2000) and Nasser Saleh Al Attiyah (skeet shooting, London 2012) were the other bronze medallists in Qatar’s history.

Congrats Mutaz!

I can still remember my dad cheering for Sulaiman at the 1992 Olympics. I was only a kid. Everyone who came to watch it at my place went crazy when he won bronze.
