Al Wakrah Stadium designer Zaha Hadid passes away
Iraqi-born British artist Zaha Hadid, the chief architect behind the Al Wakrah Stadium which will host some of the matches of the 2022 FIFA World Cup, has died.
The 65-year-old, who was the first woman to receive the Royal Institute of British Architects Gold Medal in recognition of her work, died after suffering a heart attack in a Miami hospital, where she was being treated for bronchitis.
The Al Wakrah Stadium will feature a natural grass pitch cooled to a temperature not exceeding 26 degrees Celsius. Spectator stands will also be cooled to a comfortable 24-28 degrees Celsius.
Born in Baghad, Hadid studied mathematics at the American University of Beirut. She set up her own company — Zaha Hadid Architects — in 1979.
A highly polarising figure, the Japanese government scrapped plans to build the futuristic-looking stadium she designed for the 2020 Olympics in Tokyo, opting instead for a scaled-down, less costly design.
