Al-Attiyah to Participate in His 19th Dakar Rally
After being crowned as the 2021 FIA World Cup for Cross Country Rallies Champion, Qatar’s sports sensation Nasser Al-Attiyah is all set to take part in his 19th Dakar Rally. This is the world’s toughest rally to flag off in Saudi Arabia on January 1.
Al-Attiyah bagged the World Cup win after acing four out of six events in 2021, including the Andalusia Rally, Rally of Morocco, Abu Dhabi Desert Challenge, and the Hail International Rally. So far, he has finished nine times on the podium and led Qatar to victory in the event in 2011, 2015, and 2019. He now aims to win his fourth Dakar Rally title.
The sportsman, along with his French co-driver Mathieu Baumel, is all set to enter the event in the all-new Toyota GR DKR Hilux T1+. The car’s latest features include a twin-turbocharged V6 petrol engine and a single-shock suspension system. With bigger sports wheels and a bold new look, the Toyota is amped up to give Al-Attiyah the advantage in the demanding rally.
The Dakar rally will kickstart from Jeddah to Ha’il from January 1, 2022. The road section comprises of 815 kilometers where 19 km will be short-timed under Stage 1 by the organizers. In a clockwise manner, the race track will pass through Al Artawiyah and Al Qaisumah to reach the capital city of Riyadh.
After a few days of rest, the camp will begin another leg of the journey on January 8. From Riyadh, the race will pass through Al Dawadimi, Wadi Ad Dawasir, and Bisha—finally concluding in Riyadh on January 14.
Al-Attiyah is about to face his toughest competition from Sebastian Loeb, the World Rally Champion, who is eyeing his first Dakar Rally win.
