Since I've been a member here in QL, I've read topics threads turn to personal/character and cultural bashing. This country is better than that, this culture is better that the other....%#%^$^%&^!!!!!

How about you tell us what your "country/nationality" is known for?

I guess I have to go first:

Filipinos are known for their hospitality, industrious, warm and friendly people. We are also known for our love for bagoong (shrimp paste)and tuyo (dried fish).

How about you?

Noticed that some are forgetting many important things about their countries.

Also some are lazy to talk about their countries. SO, I have highlighted certain distinguished features that I know :D

Coming back to Lebanon,I was among the first to post here. Also, some guy started a thread about Lebanon about a month or two ago.

Shreeya. If you are very interested to know more details about Lebanon, check the following site:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lebanon

I would extract from there the following:

"The earliest known settlements in Lebanon date back to earlier than 5000 BC. Archaeologists have discovered in Byblos, which is considered to be the oldest continuously-inhabited city in the world"

Kellysheroes,

If I am not wrong the topic says 'How about you tell us what your "country/nationality" is known for?' and not what other countries are known for right? I am curious to know more about Lebanon as your profile says you are from there.

And it is an endless list for India for what we are known for.

A small country (in population) in the North-West of Europe.

We have:

- High taxes (some of the highest in the world)

- Incredibly expensive alcohol

- Our beautiful fjords

- Mountains, everywhere!

- Skiing and other winter sports

- Winter Olympics of 1994

- The Nobel Price (this was invented by a Swede but is held in Norway)

- Oil and gas =)

- Trying to mediate in the Middle-East

- Peacekeeping forces over large areas of the world

- A friendly nature and love of the sun

- Being huge fans of football (no, it's not called soccer)

- A-Ha

- Viking blood!

Not so good:

- We tend to be arrogant about how great our country is (even worse than Americans)

- Annoying English accent (for some at least)

A small correction for our Indian friends:

Extract from Wikipedia:

=======================

Muḥammad ibn Mūsā al-Khwārizmī (Arabic: محمد بن موسى الخوارزمي) was a Persian[1] mathematician, astronomer, astrologer and geographer. He was born around 780 in Khwārizm[2] (now Khiva, Uzbekistan) and died around 850. He worked most of his life as a scholar in the House of Wisdom in Baghdad.

His Algebra was the first book on the systematic solution of linear and quadratic equations. Consequently he is considered to be the father of algebra,[3] a title he shares with Diophantus. Latin translations of his Arithmetic, on the Indian numerals, introduced the decimal positional number system to the Western world in the 12th century.[4] He revised and updated Ptolemy's Geography as well as writing several works on astronomy and astrology.

His contributions not only made a great impact on mathematics, but on language as well. The word algebra is derived from al-jabr, one of the two operations used to solve quadratic equations, as described in his book. The words algorism and algorithm stem from algoritmi, the Latinization of his name.[5] His name is also the origin of the Spanish word guarismo[6] and of the Portuguese word algarismo, both meaning digit.

Extract from www.famousmuslims.com :

====================================

Abu Abdullah Mohammad Ibn Musa al-Khawarizmi was born at Khawarizm (Kheva), south of Aral sea. Very little is known about his early life, except for the fact that his parents had migrated to a place south of Baghdad. The exact dates of his birth and death are also not known, but it is established that he flourished under Al- Mamun at Baghdad through 813-833 and probably died around 840 C.E.

Khawarizmi was a mathematician, astronomer and geographer. He was perhaps one of the greatest mathematicians who ever lived, as, in fact, he was the founder of several branches and basic concepts of mathematics. In the words of Phillip Hitti, he influenced mathematical thought to a greater extent than any other medieval writer. His work on algebra was outstanding, as he not only initiated the subject in a systematic form but he also developed it to the extent of giving analytical solutions of linear and quadratic equations, which established him as the founder of Algebra. The very name Algebra has been derived from his famous book Al-Jabr wa-al-Muqabilah. His arithmetic synthesized Greek and Hindu knowledge and also contained his own contribution of fundamental importance to mathematics and science. Thus, he explained the use of zero, a numeral of fundamental importance developed by the Arabs. Similarly, he developed the decimal system so that the overall system of numerals, 'algorithm' or 'algorizm' is named after him. In addition to introducing the Indian system of numerals (now generally known as Arabic numerals), he developed at length several arithmetical procedures, including operations on fractions. It was through his work that the system of numerals was first introduced to Arabs and later to Europe, through its translations in European languages. He developed in detail trigonometric tables containing the sine functions, which were probably extrapolated to tangent functions by Maslama. He also perfected the geometric representation of conic sections and developed the calculus of two errors, which practically led him to the concept of differentiation. He is also reported to have collaborated in the degree measurements ordered by Mamun al-Rashid were aimed at measuring of volume and circumference of the earth.

The development of astronomical tables by him was a significant contribution to the science of astronomy, on which he also wrote a book. The contribution of Khawarizmi to geography is also outstanding, in that not only did he revise Ptolemy's views on geography, but also corrected them in detail as well as his map of the world. His other contributions include original work related to clocks, sundials and astrolabes.

Several of his books were translated into Latin in the early 12th century. In fact, his book on arithmetic, Kitab al-Jam'a wal- Tafreeq bil Hisab al-Hindi, was lost in Arabic but survived in a Latin translation. His book on algebra, Al-Maqala fi Hisab-al Jabr wa-al- Muqabilah, was also translated into Latin in the 12th century, and it was this translation which introduced this new science to the West "completely unknown till then". He astronomical tables were also translated into European languages and, later, into Chinese. His geography captioned Kitab Surat-al-Ard, together with its maps, was also translated. In addition, he wrote a book on the Jewish calendar Istikhraj Tarikh al-Yahud, and two books on the astrolabe. He also wrote Kitab al-Tarikh and his book on sun-dials was captioned Kitab al-Rukhmat, but both of them have been lost.

The influence of Khawarizmi on the growth of science, in general, and mathematics, astronomy and geography in particular, is well established in history. Several of his books were readily translated into a number of other languages, and, in fact, constituted the university textbooks till the 16th century. His approach was systematic and logical, and not only did he bring together the then prevailing knowledge on various branches of science, particularly mathematics, but also enriched it through his original contribution. No doubt he has been held in high repute throughout the centuries since then.

I did not know all this about Buzzanca, and this stereotype does not give a positive image of the "italian male", but we should always try to laugh at our less impressive side, specialy when is true.

But Buzzanca becomes famous for his role in the unforgettable film Il Merlo Maschio, (The Male Blackbird), where in a provincial environment of cultural importance, like it is the philharmonic orchestra of the Arena di Verona, he vents out his own frustrations, indulging into candaulism when he induces his bride to expose her naked body in the middle of a bridge in Verona.

Some critics, in a lighter vein, has defined Buzzanca as an "Homo Eroticus": a human being halfway between Homo erectus, and Homo sapiens, who risked extinction in the 1970s, because of the harsh struggle with feminism activists. Today, even if fortunately much less important, this human type is still very present between the Italian male.

We should recognize that Buzzanca's fame is greater in foreign countries that in native land, and in countries as France, Japan, Greece, Israel, Spain and Switzerland, he is a renown international stereotype of the Italianprovincialotto, elegant, naif, always trying to do some mischief, and not obtaining from this anything constructive.
