I do not agree with 'nothing' particularity when it is so much generalized. Bertrand Russell puts it beautifully "What does not exist must be something, or it would be meaningless to deny its existence".
Hasan Basri died centuries ago and today we are discussing his quote. He himself is certainly not 'nothing'. I believe 'nothing' are those who die without creating impact. Others are 'something'!
Live each day like it's our last.. Cos it just might be! Live life to the fullest and let bygones be bygones. Two causes of many a mental anguishes are regrets of the past and worries pertaining to the future. Nothing of which is truly and/or completely within our control hence why hold onto them? Better take advantage of our life, health and livelihood and use them to benefit ourselves and those around us. Then perhaps even our death will be a joyous end to our life on earth rather than being one of great tragedy!
Many of us spend days constantly thinking of how “one day” I will be enjoying my life. “One day”, I will be living how I want to live. Well, what if “one day” never happens? Life is incredibly short. NOW is the time to enjoy life, not later.
This universe began some 13.8 billion years ago from singularity and in another few trillion years all stars will turn into either black holes or black dwarfs. Gradually all these black bodies will also evaporate into radiation.
We are like living on a speck of sand on one of the beaches of the world and our civilisation will live for just another moment if we consider the life-span of our universe.
We are nothing for sure....:)
And to realise that the elements in our bodies were forged in the stars and would eventually find a place in another...is the ultimate 'spiritual' feeling a person can have.
“Live in this world as (if you are) a wayfarer or a stranger.” And Abdullah ibn Umar (May Allah be pleased with them both) used to say: “If you live till night, then do not wait for the next day (i.e. do not have hopes that you will live to the next day), and if you wake up in the morning do not have hope that you will live till the night. And take (advantage) from your health before your sickness and take advantage of your life before your death (i.e. do every possible obedience in your life before death comes to you for then no deeds can be performed.)”
I beg to disagree with the subject line that you are nothing. Anything that exists came to existence through some high authority and the existence itself is a proof that everything that exists has some form of Importance depending upon purpose of existence. We came to existence for some purpose and our entire lives should be devoted to find that purpose and to ultimately fulfill it. If we were nothing or meant for nothing than it contradicts every notion of justice and balance in nature i.e. Then whatever we do is NOTHING as well if we are nothing which surely is a GROSS statement. Everything we do or think counts and how can we be nothing when our actions or deeds are NOT nothing !
having a temporary experience of human beings. Body is the container and the actual content is soul which never dies. Death is the one way entry to the other world. Life is a chance to make choices, it is upto us to make it worthy. :)
Yes Pillai, In Islam we have similar teachings like "arafa nafsahu faqad 'arafa Rabbahu' (“Whosoever knows himself knows his Lord.” it is a Hadith) and in Quran it is mentioned in many places one of them is "Indeed he succeeds who purifies his own self"
This is my conclusion, the more you strive to find yourself, the more you will find the reality". Death would be the best moment of anyone's life who finds this reality.
Yes diamond . Anything which tell us the reality of death will be depressing. The only fear we have is fear of death. All other fears on life comes out of this basic fear. The only way to come out of this fear is to realize we are not the body. Then the attachment , desires will come down. It doesn't mean that we won't enjoy our life.
Close the eyes and observe the thoughts , we can do that right ? We can do the same with our body , emotion and moods. That means we are not the body or mind. As nomerci said we are shaped by our mind but we are not that. Then who is this observer . Contemplate on it. What left is consciousness or self or being . The whole effort of life is to find this and escape from the chain of death and birth. In Hindu mythology it's called moksha.
“The flesh surrenders itself. Eternity takes back its own. Our bodies stirred these waters briefly, danced with a certain intoxication before the love of life and self, dealt with a few strange ideas, then submitted to the instruments of Time. What can we say of this? I occurred. I am not...yet, I occurred.”

I heard Steve jobs look at the mirror every day mornning and say "today is my last day "!
Perhaps you need to have a read of Gypsy Gals's positivity thread...

We make the reality depressing, it is not actually, isn't it?
Depressing maybe; Reality, sadly so!
Yes these are the similarities. :)
That's same thing Christ also said." I have overcome the world"

I am not just a number of DAYS
And even if i was
I will stay here, maybe not by my body
But will make sure to leave something to be remembered
Hi diamond..isn't it just ???
Thank god, we are far from nothing, we are EVERYTHING. :)
Every single one of us makes up the whole...everything.
I find that quote quite depressing really.

Brit, thing is "I am " not flesh.
“The flesh surrenders itself. Eternity takes back its own. What can we say of this? I occurred. I am not...yet, I occurred.”
DUNE
So far more than 17,000 parts of mine have gone.
pillai76,how do you define consciousness? I looked at some definitions and am struggling a bit to understand your comment.
The reality of life is that it never ends...it changes.
One day every one have to Die....enjoy life but do not forget this reality
You are the conciousness which has no end . You dont have birth or death . Both happens only to the body and you are beyond that...
One day every one have to Die....enjoy life but do not forget this reality
Yep, soon you will be asleep in a void of nothingness.
