What to do if harassed. (YES you can DO something)

amnesia

Guys, I think it's not very clear the punishment that someone can get into for even the slightest thing these days. All you need to do is report someone and a full investigation goes through.

Before someone screams "Oh that will do nothing towards Qataris" listen to this, it's one of many stories.

A person I know, a Qatari, was driving on the road and an indian woman cut him off and almost caused him to crash. He then sped up to her side and used the hand gesture which means, 'slow down, or 'what?'' (it's done by touching all your fingers together and face up.

3 hours later, the police call him up and he has to go to the station. He was told that he was reported for sticking his middle finger up at her and being rude.

Now, when you are reported, they do something called a FREEZE. They keep you in the police station WHILE they are investigating the issue. He swore that he didn't do anything but they said they would sort it.
(Obviously the woman lied to waste time).

Now here is where luck comes in, his friend was using his brand new mobile and playing around with the video camera and FILMED her cutting him off and his hand gesture. Obviously he was lucky in this case, but the point is, if you are in a situation where you are harrassed by ANYONE, just call the police and report them.

:) Yes it helps.

Maria.m : Your previous posts were a bit annoying I must say. You sound much sensible now. Yes, I am not arguing the fact that women don't get assaulted or harassed. It happens all over the world. That's sentence coming from you sounds more correct. About Doha was a bit over the top, to me. As for that line, well so long as one minds their own business and even TRY to safe, you should be fine. Again, I could be wrong and Indians could be plain lucky. As proven in Shreeya's and our case.

Rayzz, my time to take words back. I am not being chased by guys as you put it, but there are frequent incidents.

Gypsy,Shreeya, harassement has nothing to do with nationality. It is about what situation a women is in. I feel it a power thing with men. My friend once had a meeting with a client, a thobe cladded (I am not mentioning nationality). His office was bustling with activity, but his room was a bit secluded. After the meeting he extended his hand for a formal hand shake. When she offered her hand, he pulled her towards him and tried to assualt her. She managed to break free and ran out of his office. This is just one scenario.

LOL, maybe she's just lucky then! Sorry Sheerya, They do try and touch me, I've never been asked price though. I'm not saying this as an insult to Indians at all, I'm just saying those are the ones that have harrassed me. Considering the huge population of single male Indians (many of whom are probably not overly educated) It's only natural.

From my experience I beg to differ Gypsy. I think our people find you gals so beautiful that they just can't stop staring at you. Look, in my country Fair skin is always considered as the most beautiful. And your bold approach sometimes adds fuel . But still I don't think, at least not Indians, that westerners are 'wh*res'. I heard this first time in my life only on QL.

In fact your beauty keeps them away from you, let alone touching and asking price etc.

Correct me if I'm wrong Rayyz, but your wife is Indian is she not? My guess is that many of the men here simply have much more respect for her then they do Western or Oriental women (because I know Filipinas are harrassed more then anyone). I wouldn't say it has anything to do with her looks.

I am here for last one year and touch wood, never get assaulted or harassed in any manner. On the Olympic bid celebration day, I took a long walk all the way to City center with my son to get some Mc'ds for him. The car was parked far away so I have to walk taking all shortcuts behind Kharamma building. Many workers (Indians, B'deshis, Pakistanis, Srilankans , fillipinos, Nepalis and a western family for a change too!!!) were using the same way too. But nothing like harassment, suggestive comments etc. I think I am way too bad looking to get harassed!!!!

Gypsy, don't get me wrong or racist, thats why when I read such comments like only Indians, Pakistanis, Nepalis, Sub continental, diasporans dare to assault you by even touching sometimes etc, I suspect a degree of fabrication to some extent just like 'The lady in bikini sun bathing in car park'...LOL

Well, take a search there is a big story of a western woman chessed by a local. Such thing happens.

I didn't mean to self glorify. The fact is this happens because I have blonde hair, which stands out. This isn't glorification, I'm not proud of it, it drives me crazy.

Okay so you opted for the serious part :)

To me at least one sounded a little fake, to be very honest. Possibly giving you the 'Hot Property' tag. Doha isn't actually as bad in terms of harassment when compared to numerous incidents listed above, at least to one person!

My wife drives all over Doha by herself and with her friends, I can't remember last when she had a problem of someone trying to harass her. And she isn't exactly ugly.

Probably it was couple of years back at the FFC in the morning or something. And that too the guy asked her if she needs a lift in the parking lot outside. She said no thank you and the guy left. I really won't even think of that as an harassing incident.

I've always been a positive person. Trust me though my stay in the UK was stressfull. I wanted to cry. 23 now and ready to take on the world. I'm sure it'll die down, but it wont be anytime soon.

For me my life is simple, I respect everyone who respects me.

As for getting angry, sometimes I do lose my temper, but it's at anyone, my anger is non-discriminatory LOOL.

I remember being parked on the road and this guy wouldn't go around. So I made a hand gesture to indicate, 'go around'.

The guy DID go around and parked next to me. I rolled down the window with a cold face and said "relax, my friend went to get his insulin, or 10 seconds too long for you?" He smiled and said "oh, sorry, and drove away".

By the way I think I have a european face so I have to deal with idiots too :P

I admire your way of thinking and really appreciate it. You're still very young and probably your stay in the west is keeping you high at the moment. Wonder if this will last for long. All it takes for you is to stumble by getting duped by a bad apple (an expat of course) and it won't take you much longer to show the dominance.

But, If you do stick to your ideology say a decade down the line, I can say for sure you would have made a lot of difference.

@knox, i don't know what you are talking about. I'm confused.

I am here as a person offering help. If you don't want my assistance why even say it? However yes, I do think you are living in paranoia at the moment.

Who am I? I'm just a guy who really wants his country to be seen in good light; however the only way we can do this is if we work hard to make it a better place.

That's why I wrote this thread, to get people to report bad occurances.

Yes there are those who get away with wastas, but I for one will never say "they're going to get away with it, so I might as well stay quiet".

Despite anyone's opinions of me, I'm here to help and if you need a Qatari on your side (as long as it's the right side), I'll do my best to help.

I want to kick corruption, arrogance, and anything unjust, out of Qatar!

@Rayzz, thanks for your kind words!

Yes I do consider myself part of the new generation. The generation of open minded people.

For example, when I first finished university, I came here wearing jeans and a nice shirt. I was sitting with some friends of my father (who were around 60 years old) and they all said "You have to wear a thobe or else nobody will respect you". Do you know what I replied? "If people don't respect me because I don't wear a thobe, then I never wanted their respect in the first place. In fact, if they underestimate me, that's even better for me, they wont know what is whizzing past them on the corporate ladder".

I don't think Knox meant I was getting a kick out of seeing people's suffering... if so.. I don't really know what to say...

I whacked someone on the Corniche who was about to grab me.

I wonder if I ever said this on QL. I've been to the detention center at the capital police station once for 5 odd hours, back in 1999. Was way too proud of my new found youth and really short tempered then.

Was talking to my friend below his building late in the evening and my car was parked in such a way that it blocked another car from coming out. So this guy, a Tunisian, came down and wanted to take his car out. I moved my car few meters back to let him go, after that I put my car back in the place to where it was. This charlie probably didn't like it. He got out and told me to move my car from there. I told him there's no reason to do that, unless you want to park your car back in again. This lead to heavy arguments, followed by verbal abuses and almost into fist fight.

Apparently the guy has always been in and out of trouble (which I came to know much later) with the cops, so for a change he got a chance to be on the good side and called up the cops. I did my part too and reported to the traffic police of the incident. The traffic police told me not to bother about it and just go home, as they has better things to do than resolving such minor incidents. Little did I know that he had actually called up the capital police. When I was about to leave, he said to wait as the cops were on the way, I was pretty sure they won't come so I told him to take down my number plate and ask them to call me.

Next day in the office, I get a call from capital police and they asked me to come over as a complaint had been lodged against me. I went there and after 3-4 hours of questioning, they asked me hand over my stuff and then put me into a cell at the back, the dentention center. Apparently, the rule is if you are reported against, then its automatically its your fault unless proven otherwise. So if there is any problem, it is always wise to report first.

Anyhow, one good thing I did before handing over my wallet and cellphone, was to call a Sheikh friend of mine. Thru his wasta, he got hold of number of the complainant in matter of few hours and just told him to drop the case. The Tunisian guy didn't agree to it. Eventually, my friend said fine if you don't do that, do not blame me for whatever happens to you.

Rest is history, he got terrified and rushed to the police station and dropped the case. My friend and I were out by evening.

I know it wasn't right, but then I guess that was the only way to solve the issue. Else I'd be rotting in the detention center for next 3 months until the case was solved by the court, which could have led to possible deportation from Doha, not to forget the humiliation.

I think any harrased lady should take a pic. of these despos and print in Gulf times or better in an arabic paper the very next day....

I always thought eve teasing, harasment, following and gesturing wrong things to a lady is rare in Middle east. After reading all these comments I am a bit spectical about what my wife would wear.

Oh!!! She can handle herself in the wrost of situations but this being a foreign country and without a wasta.. How can these guys be so despos even after 4 wives at home.

Charans.: I will keep note of stones dear. You dont find them handy at all places, mabe carry few in purse.

I know one lady who got harassed in the Souq area. She was walking with a friend and a man came from behind and squeezed her bum and walked quickly passed them. You know what she did, she ran after the guy and beat and kicked the hell out of him...none of the people around them even tried to stop her..I guess they knew why!

Novita, the Centre is where I was assaulted. I've also had a cab driver try and get in the back seat with me and I had to get out of the cab. I've had guys bang into my car to get my number, and I've been followed around City Center a couple of times. One guy actually grabbed my arm and I shouted at him to let me go.

Actually, I've never been assaulted by a local, for me it's always Indian or Pakistani's.

She waited anothe two vehicles approch the place and suddenly took a big stone and smashed the windscreen of the SUV. he ran like hell and no problem after that so far:)

I have been followed few times by landcruiser drove by arab man in local attired (i dont want to pointing out he is Qatari just in case i offend Amnesia)on the way to school. But as soon as i parked the car next to the police car who patrol my son's school they normally drove away.

Used to do groceries in Megamart landmark ... in the early morning you will find few "arab local men in local attired" drove around the car park for ages with no reason. They asked wether i want a lift ??? They also followed me around the isle while i am doing the shopping.

I stopped going to landmark in the early morning ... i goes to The Centre instead. It seems OK.

Amnesia : Well the point still remains that not all Qatari's with vitamin W (and the fact remains is that most of them DO have it) do not use them. In 20 years of my stay in Qatar, my understand of Wasta is not 'priority and help', it means contacts at the top level to get things done or get you out of trouble. But yes, if we people don't speak then they will never know the outcome. It helps and has helped me in at least one case, although the offending party wasn't a Qatari, but could have had a big Qatari backing.

Gypsy : Interesting story indeed! I hope you haven't picked it from somewhere else. So what happened after that? Didn't you question them for asking such vulgar question?

Any doctor in the world know of this medicine . It is purple colour and also use for burns. It is to heal the wound and to protect against infections.

Molesting or indecent exposure to a woman will earn you 6 canning shots. on 1st shot your skin will be split. No Joke.

I had a demostration vedio of sentence being carried out. I will search for it.

Illegal stay over 3 months, you will be gifted with 3 canes. I have seen a guy who got 3 cane shots for his overstay.

However in the fact of being harassed, one day, when I moved into my new home a daterto take the waster litter out on to the street - (was wearing knee lenght shorts) when a neighbour saw me she came reacing up the road waving her stick at me and shouting something incoherent and stood there makein grimaces of all kinds until I understood she was upset that I was in front of my house with half bare legs.

She frightened the daylights out of me as I thought something drastic had happened, only she did not want me to go on the street like that as there are many labourers working in that area and is was not decent..

For certain offences like Vandalism, Rape, Harassement of Women. No wasta can you get off the hook.

Even Bill Clington tried it once as the President of USA. He only manage to reduce the sentence from 6 canes to 4 on that US teange who vandalised a car.

They don't put acid after canning. They put medicine for wounds.

The sentence is carried out with the supervision of a Government Doctor.

One more thing Amnesia, .... something relevant to Harassement. This is what happened to me :

One day I was out on my balcony puting some clothes to dry there. I just saw an old woman ( not sure of her nationality) the opposite side. She started making gestures. I just ignored her, but I understand that she was trying to chase me from my own balcony. I swear by God Almighty that I have never done any voyeurism and I just hate that. But.... Do I have the right to use my balcony or not ??? that would be a shame not to be able to do that ?? I'm aware, that the woman could have called the police and could have invented a whole story, but I just don't care . Allah is the only protector:)

Anyway, .........

Amnesia, I just believe you, but when it comes to facts, Qataris would still use things such as "wasta". I hope Qataris will understand Inchallah that we're not here to invade their country.I've heard many times that phrase" I'm Qatari, and this is my country" ?? so what ? This doesn't mean you have the right to harm others.

u just insulted the system not the corrupted policeman. on the other hand i know qataris who are in prison for these kind of behavior

there is a difference between priority and injustice. everybody gets the priority in his country. but that does not mean when it comes to a corrupted policeman the injustice begins as if he represents the justice in the whole country.

and that is the case internationally.

My personal opinion is, I think it would be a whole different issue if it came to Qatari against Ex-pat.

Amnesia I am going to narrate you a true incident

There are many egyptian flats near my house. One day one of the egyptian girl was getting off the school bus and there was a guy standing near the entrance of the building. When she reached the elevator inside the building he tried to give her a letter and she didnt take it. When the guy insisted she started crying, and screaming. The people of the other flats heard her cries they came out and gave the culprit some beating. By then someone had called the police and the police came and took the guy with them. Do you know what happened next? That guy was released the same day and the police told the father of the girl that the Qatari guy has promised that he will not harass anyone. So it is no use to press any charges against him.

I still meet that guy everyday and he tells me that even the police cannot harm him.

So dude where is Justice? As for the girl and her parents, they left that place and moved to another building.
