..when's it opening in the mall - put me out my misery

i reckon i would spend more on pork than on the booze - just don't have a hankering for it as much out here - especially as i'm scottish and tight as they come - i'd be cursing myself as i gulp down a 40 riyal beer - which i understand is the price in the sheraton et al.

re these vegetarians - i don't think they avoid meat because they love animals - their veggies 'cause the hate plants.

Point taken.

Maybe Qatar Airways think they couldn't generate as much income selling pork.

By anonymous• 25 Jan 2010 14:39

dweller, I know that. It's just that if they allow (haram) alcohol, then why not allow (haram) pork? There is no consistency in the hypocrisy.

Alcohol has always been available for sale in Qatar if you had a permit.

It had bars too before the hotels went wet in the late 90's.

The last (pre 90's) one in Doha (QGPC's Open Arms Bar) was closed in 1983.

board was already up at MALL for opening soon.....

lets leave the Pork issue to the Management/sponsors of Spinney and Qatar Ministry of Commerce.

As discussed that spinneys caters wide variety of products in Bakery, Fried items, certain UK products and Fresh vegatables (Monday Markets in UAE)....

Competition with Lulu arise because The Mall is very close to AL Fardan Gardens and Lulu Hypermarket.

You're looking at two countries in Europe, not the whole of Europe. And why do you have to be intolerant just because those two countries are being intolerant? Do you really want to sink to their level (though granted you have to rise a bit to even get to their level, because while these are just two intolerant things, in general they are far more tolerant of other cultures then Qatar is in it's wildest dreams)

But un fortunately in Europe, they are starting to vote against covering women face and the minarets of the mosque ? so where is the tolerance of culture

They already sell alcohol. What a progress!

By Olive• 24 Jan 2010 08:43

Personally I think it is progress on a social/cultural scale to sell pork. It's a sign that you're accepting of other cultures & people and that you don't dictate what others can do or eat just based on your own beliefs. It would be HUGE progress for Qatar to begin to sell pork.

@ Victory,i seriously doubt Spinney's will be taking any customers away from Lulu mate, they cater to a different clientele...as marycatherine correctly pointed out, especially to currently disgruntled megamart shoppers(6 riyals for a mars bar!!!,they have some cheek those guys but the fact remains, they know people don't have another choice) & they will be offering products of a certain quality that Lulu doesn't stock anyways...It needn't just be about weather or not they'll stock & sell pork products & quite honestly,it seems highly unlikely that they will...Chili's is known around the world for their margaritas,Chili's here is very popular minus the margaritas,in fact minus even beer or wine...

lets look at the positive effect of Spinney's in Qatar rather taking it towards......P***.

I see good competition with Lulu and Carrefour....in recent future and an opportunity for consumer to select most reasonable and quality product in the town with much more variety I presume.

Peace

It's not progress on a social/cultural scale to sell pork - it provides more choice for those who wish to buy it.

Spinney's carries a wide variety of goods (South African, British, some US etc. that are sometimes difficult to find elsewhere - however, Megamart does carry some similar items and I welcome any and all competition with Megamart which sometimes has bizarre ideas of what it can charge for some items - simply because you can't get them somewhere else (or so I suppose)

However I think a non Muslim section in a small number of supermarkets would be welcomed by a large number of expats. (don't tell me it hasn't happened as the Muslims would be too tempted to try a bacon sandwhich....)

think of it like the selling of halal meat on non Muslim countries. It doesn't hurt anyone and gives the individual freedom of choice.

By anonymous• 23 Jan 2010 18:26
anonymous

They have no Muslim sections in at least two supermarkets I know of and you can buy pork based dishes in the hotels as well.

As for progress being based on selling pork that is just stupid. Everyone knows that progress is based on being able to make a good steak..

By anonymous• 23 Jan 2010 14:06

Ok roberto, I once went to a supermarket there and was curtly told, we don't sell pork in AbuDhabi so wrongly assumed it is banned altogether..

Why is Qatar 20 year behind UAE if they don't allow Pork and as far as I know AbuDhabi & Sharjah don't allow Pork so does that mean AbuDhabi & Sharjah are 20 years behind Dubai. 20 years behind Dubai in bankruptcy maybe.

I very much doubt they'll be selling pork. They can't sell it in Sharjah in UAE.

because they sell pork in UAE, not mean it selling here. Qatar about 20 years behind UAE when it comes to inter racial/religous progress. Then again, guess UAE selling pork more than 20yrs ago, so who knows:-0
