At the risk of re-starting the "buying players" debate yet again, I quite enjoyed this review of yesterday's game; http://blogs.guardian.co.uk/sport/2008/06/23/lions_tamed_as_iraq_crash_out.html

Some of the comments at the end make entertaining reading!

This document details the qualification process; http://www.fifa.com/mm/document/tournament/competition/2010_fwc_qualification_format_asia_en_17176.pdf

To summarise what happens next;

Round 3 has just been completed, with Qatar qualifying as a runner up.

Round 4 consists of two groups of five teams. Each team plays the others in its group twice.

The winner and runner-up of each group goes to the World Cup in 2010.

The two 3rd placed teams play each other home and away, and the winner then has to play the top team from the Oceania qualifying group. The winner of that goes to the World Cup in 2010.

It was very inspiring to see how the Qatari spectators reacted to the one goal last night and Good for Qatar.

However, two yellow cards and very little actual team play could have cost the team much more, they passed so many opportunities to a single player holding the ball and kicking it to himself without actually passing.

Mind you I watched this on TV I have no idea how it is on the field.

i believe the first two from each of the current 5 groups will be grouped into 2 groups of 5 each. see this link for the standings: http://www.the-afc.com/eng/competitions/fixtures/index.jsp_WC-2007-464.html

the two groups will be drawn on the 27th june, at kuala lumpur. the top two teams in each of the group will proceed to the 2010 world cup. the third placed team from each group will then play each other over 2 legs. the winner of that will face the winner of the OFC qualification over 2 legs to go through (phew!)

and greeker, "qatars greatest football moment"???? c'mon, theres been greater moments.

I have sort of lost touch with football. Used to be that the Oceania group played off with either a central asia/middle east group winner or a South American 5th(?) place country for direct entry into the finals.

I think they may have changed this now eg Australia now play in Asian qual. group, but I am sure Oceania group winner still has to play off someone.

I'm so proud. Both Qatar and Iraq put their hearts into it. Of course I'm happy that Qatar won, but I'd have been equally happy if Iraq won.

:D

Any idea what teams they will be playing in the next round?

Do they have to win the next round outright to go to South Africa?

Or do they have to play a play-off with the winner of another group?

Anything for 2nd place in the 4th round group?
