Library in Doha?

Hi,

Are there any good lending libraries in Doha? And which is the best bookstore around to buy some decent fiction/non fiction books? I heard that they can be very expensive.. is it so?

Thank you in advance!

Does Georgetown university at Education City have fiction books or are they all academic books. I had a look at their catalogue online and could not find any fiction

Don't know the policies for the public, but there is a fairly good selection of English classics and newer novels. I know people who use the library for their summer reading plans.

If there isn't a policy, there should be--its a good library without a lot of usage. Why not open it to the public?

PM me and I'll give you the contact name of the person to follow up with.

Yeah, I get a lot of stuff from Amazon too. I got a sea shipment, so before I left I bought heaps of stuff I wanted to read and put it in the shipment. That has worked well so far. Then I figured I could trade around with people/go to the used book shop in Singapore/something else.

but nothing ever beats a REAL book ~ i'm not in favor of downloading literature off the internet ~ it's just so... electronic +_+

i love holding the book in my hands, flipping its pages, the feel of papaer n_n

bedtime reading on your laptop?.. it's just not the same +_+

unfortunately there aren't any good libraries around here, i sometimes see people sitting in Jarir on some of the chairs scattered here & there but it's not a very inviting area to read with people and their sometimes screaming kids jumping around +_+ wish they, virgin or even the family bookshop in al-nasr considered creating a quiet reading space. Alas, what doesn't bring them money is never considered.

Jarir has some good books but i've always preferred family bookshop and now virgin. Never thought it was a good idea to mix stationary and school/office supplies with books ~ they could've at least dedicated a separate floor just for books ~ that sure would've been quiter.

But nowadays i buy most of my books from amazon.com anyway =)

Well, yeah, the .pdf works for the items which are eBooks, anyway. Not everything is available as an eBook. Various reasons, really. It makes our buying a lot more difficult.

Get an eBook reader on your computer and download eBooks.

Or get a Sony Reader. Those gadgets are supposed to be really good on the eyes. We're looking at the Sony Reader for some library items.

Instead of buying a hardcover book you could download the PDF version in Amazon, com, barnes and nobles, booksamillion etc. All you need is a valid credit card and will cost pennies for your money. If that don't work then you are SOL!

Well is it possible for non students/faculty to be members at Georgetown?

Btw, I checked out the British Consul website, apparently they have reduced their stock :(, I should probably go take a look though...

Yeah, I remember we were talking about this too.

Check out the British Consul.

Or check out Georgetown, at Education City. You can pay a 50 riyal deposit and get general borrowing privileges. I think you're limited on the number of items you can borrow, and you can't borrow any media. However, you can probably sit in the library and watch stuff.

The staff at Cornell are probably their best ILL customers. We are borrowing stuff to read all the time! Or I am, anyway.

Here Library for books...usually means a shop where school books & Note books, diaries, pencils, stencils etc are sold.

I really wonder if there is one where most of the famous Titles are available for reading & lending at a price.

The only meaningful Library are the Video Libraries all over town and even in Malls (Lulu) etc.

Do a search on this forum, Just a few days back there was someone offering to rent books. Jarir and Virgin at Villagio are two good places for books. Amazon.com is also a good option.
