Airstrike video elicits Iraqi rage, U.S. explanations

Film of a 2007 U.S. helicopter attack in Baghdad that killed two Reuters employees has become a sensation on the Internet.

By TIM ARANGO and ELISABETH BUMILLER, New York Times
BAGHDAD - The women of Saeed Chmagh's family wept, but the men did not as they watched a video of him being shot to death by a gunner on a U.S. Apache helicopter.

"I saw the truth," Samir Chmagh, 19, son of the dead man, said Tuesday in his family's living room in Baghdad. "They saw clearly that they were journalists and that they were holding cameras. It was painful when we saw this movie."

It was a fog-of-war moment in July 2007 on the streets of Baghdad in which U.S. troops gunned down men they identified as insurgents. The attack left 12 people dead, including Namir Noor-Eldeen, a 22-year-old Reuters photographer, and Chmagh, 40, a driver for the news agency.

A video from the cockpit of an Apache helicopter was released Monday by WikiLeaks.org, an online organization that said it had received it from a whistleblower in the military. The video has become an Internet sensation, with defenders saying the soldiers believed they were under threat and critics denouncing what they said were callous and bloodthirsty comments by the soldiers as they killed a dozen people.

A spokesman for U.S. Central Command, Lt. Cmdr. Bill Speaks, said Tuesday that the command, which oversees the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, was "looking into" the shootings.

The only investigation so far has been one directed in 2007 by Maj. Gen. Vincent Brooks. It concluded that the pilots had no reason to know that there were Reuters employees in the group on the street. No disciplinary action was taken.

they fight with pen and camera

these weapons are more powerful than bullet or a rocket.

so if u are fighting fire against fire then it is warrr.

if u are fighting pen against fire then you are saving the world

but if pens are fighting next to fire and then killing any other pens stand in front of them

then i can say "IT IS KILLING THE WORLD"

To make matters worse, a state department spokesman said that "Rules of engagement were followed", thus exonirating the pilots.

You know what punk? Shit happens! and it is part of the hazardous job of journalism in a battle zone.

The income tax has made more liars out of the American people than golf has.

I am a proud Pakistani/American Muslim and I am always very opinionated. If you disagree, be my guest. You have no right to call me a victim.

I don't claim to know you. Infact I avoid knowing people who are trying to create a Muslims Vs The rest of the world scenario so never will know you.

It takes guts to face reality, forming an opinion to suit you isn't exactly the gutsiest thing to do.

WK, Some people have the guts to have a difference of opinion instead of beating around the bushes.

What the heck you know about me?

I would be the last person to feel a victim. I speak the truth and I am not afraid of criticizing anyone.

I have travelled extensively and I know for a fact that in many Western countries Muslim is considered a synonym with terrorism.

nomad.me that attitude of yours isn't going to help matters.

Stop self-victimisation and you will realise that every Muslim is NOT considered a terrorist.

By nomad.me• 7 Apr 2010 17:51

You can call anyone a terrorist as long as he/she is a Muslim.
