(English speaking) Host Family

Sarandra
By Sarandra

Good morning,

Well, since my attempts of convincing my family throughout the years to allow me find a host family somewhere in the West in order to improve my speaking has miserably failed.. I'm trying to find a family here in Qatar. It's not an ideal situation, but it's definitely better than nothing. They haven't approved yet, but maybe they will if I managed to find a family?

I'm looking for a family who's native language is English. If you're willing to help and have any inquiries, please feel free to message me.

Thanks!

MM, she's said something similar to what you said, no? But thanks for the warning anyway, haha. But then again, who ever listens to her advice on women in the bar etc deserves what he gets. That'll teach him to use his brain next time and not blindfully obey strangers on the internet :/

They can also look for good women in bars.

Is that true MM , too low for a person to give directions to the wrong path . Good, it's a warning for the OP and other innocent souls . Good work MM.

She gives dangerous advices to single men , very bad for a woman to tell other men to look for bad women in the bars ......... ! Not a joke , really . ........................... Sat , 10.05.2014 , 08.51 hrs

I have a decent bank of vocab/phrases, and all that jazz. That's not where the problem lies =) That tape-recording tip is nice.. not as effective, but it's alright. Thanks.

That's true. Wouldn't mind a trained non-native speaker as well, so long as they don't speak Arabic. My native language is Arabic, and if they don't speak my language then that'll force me to stick to English.

Watching movies won't help much with my speaking, though. I mean, ya I'll learn new vocab/new expressions, and so on. However, I would like to use what I already know in the language as well. I want to speak, make mistakes and learn from them.

There are some things that when I hear, I have no problem whatsoever identifying what is right and what is wrong. However, when I actually speak my self, I would make a ton of mistakes cuz of little - no practice at all.

I can't even hold a very basic conversation without making mistakes. It's not that I don't "know" that what I said was incorrect, it's just that I'm not used to speaking I guess.

I hope that makes sense =)

I feel the same way as Sandra. It is good to learn language from a native speaker or highly trained non native speaker. I had been learning Arabic , I could see the difference in the quality when an Egyption teaches when compared to other nation. It does not mean that the untrained native speaker is better than the trained non-native speaker. But for "practice" as you have put it, it really make sense. But you could also watch movies and other sources till you get your native speaker.

I'm not sure I understand why people are opposing the idea. I mean, I'd say my English skills are fairly good.. it's just that I'd like to practice my speaking with native speakers, that's all. I don't want to "learn", like in school etc., I want to practice it. I want the real life language, if that makes sense.

Motlen, I want to learn what you call "street" language. That's the language that people actually use in their daily life, and that's what I'm interested in practicing! =)

Galinda.. what? That doesn't make any sense to me.

That's the same reason why you should not learn Arabic from a native speaker. They take the language from the streets.

People should learn Arabic from a westerner.

Natives are comparatively poor in the language , it's known to the inner circle folks , because they pick the language from the street , not from the universities ............................. , .................. , Fri , 09.05.2014 , 10.33 hrs
