Cyclone hammers Oman
Gulf Times report
A landslide caused by the cyclone in Muscat yesterday.
MUSCAT: Cyclone Gonu lashed Oman yesterday as thousands of people were evacuated in the Gulf state and neighbouring Iran for the strongest tropical storm to hit the region in 30 years.
As Gonu — the Maldives word for a bag made of palm fronds — hit the Omani capital strong winds snapped tree branches and blew over street signs. Roads were flooded and thick fog blanketed out the mountains encircling the city.
Heavy rain and wind led to flights being suspended at Muscat airport, but the cyclone has so far not affected shipping in the Strait of Hormuz through which at least a quarter of world oil supplies passes.
Oil experts said any impact on world oil prices would be temporary provided facilities in the area stayed intact.

waters of a flooded street in Muscat yesterday, following a cyclone that swept through Oman killing 49 people and leaving another 27 missing. Oman was lashed by driving rain and heavy winds on Wednesday as thousands of people were evacuated in the face of the storm.
The Airport was due to open on Saturday (today), however because all the wadis are in flood it is pretty much impossible for most people to get there.
I guess once the roads open up there will be an 'evacuation' with all the local airlines sending shuttle planes - to get stranded people back to Saudi (or elsewhere).
For anyone that is concerned about a hurricane/cyclone hitting Qatar - don't be! ... the waters of the Arabian Gulf won't carry it this far 'upstream'.
apparently everything including the airport is closed for three days.cant say whether it has opened or not.
Is the airport up and running?
the latest from muscat is that electricity returned last night but since the storm there has been no water as the water plant was damaged.
a friend of mine was a wreck. Her house was flooded , gate and main door broken and all her funiture including her two cars were washed onto the streets. she rushed with the kids to the first floor and spent the entire night there without any food or electricity. they were eventually rescued by their company in the morning and taken to a hotel. she has lost everything.thank god her family is safe.

I got some pics of yesterdays cyclone in Oman. How do I upload here?
panic calls were made from my side to my sister in muscat who, thank god, was safe but without electricity more than half a day yesterday. the whole house was leaking with water coming from ac vents, windows and side doors. according to her the city was calm because the government had made sure ppl took precautionary measures including stocking up on groceries. in case of a more serious cyclone everyone was told to move to higher grounds.
Hi, Good morning everybody,
I talked to my friend in Muscat, Oman. Situation is alright now but the heavy rains and strong winds continues since last 24 hrs. However the cyclone has just missed Muscat port and thats why no crucial damage to city as said by one of my friends living in the heart of the city. But the areas like Sur, Sohar are seems to be most affected. I could not contact my friend living in Sohar and I am bit worried.
i have no idea what you just said there.
Let me tell you about heartache and the loss of God
