Hi everyone hope you're all well.

I'll be over in August for at least two years teaching, everyone has been great answering my questions so thanks for that, I was wondering 2 things, again forgive me if the answers are really obvious!!:

1. Over here we love to bbq, is it common over there, even in compounds (I'll be in Al Khor Compound)
2. I've joined british expats group, just wondered whether there are regulare get togethers for everyone to meet up and chill?

Thanks in advance

:)

No doubt about ALKHOR COMMUNITY :D...its an awesome place to live in.I already posted in the previous thread what all things people can do inside the community..LOTS of different nationality ppl and cultures around and its fun to live and socialize with them..I m sure u will definitely make lots of friends in no time as u said u like socializing..well i asked the security personals about the BBQ thingy today and they said we can do with the permission from the security office :P..so it means u can do at the parks...no need to worry about the place now.

Sounds good, i had hear that Al Khor is pretty active socially which is important to me because i do enjoy socialising and meeting with lots of different people.

i am surprised i thought that there would perhaps have been more group activities for brit expats, a friend of mine has just moved to Dubai with his girlfriend teaching and i saw a doc on tv about it, it does look amazing and it is definitely on my list of places to visit.

Its good to talk to people and hopefully make friends with some of you before i come over, won't feel so isolated then!!

probably an obvious statement, but worth making nevertheless.

In terms of countries close by and based on my recent experiences, Dubai definitely has the best expat scene with Bahrain a close (but not too close) second.

Lets hope we get a few more nightspots in Doha to cater for brit and other european expats - whatever happened to the planned opening of a Trader Vics? the one in Bahrain is a pretty cool place and full of european expats!

It seems that the brit expats in Al Khor have a much better socialising scene. Us brits in the West Bay area / city center area have little more than the Irish Bar at the Sheraton, which has but a handful of brits.

Other than Garveys (which i think is still closed) and the Rugby Club i have not yet come across any other networking groups for brits. If im missing something please let me know as Im keen to meet up with fellow brits.

I guess some people also have bbq's on the corniche?

Hi Nicklessguy, thanks so much for that information, I'm glad that there seems to be such a lovely and friendly environment, I won't have a villa unfortunately as there is just me, i'll be in an apartment so i guess there will be nowhere to have a bbq there, as you said i will have to encourage those in the villas to have some!!

yes us Brits like a good party/celebration, glad it is no different in the compound, i look forward to it!!

Thanks again, i'm sure i'll see you when i'm there! :)

Now that's what i'm talking about!!

I hope to meet some like minded people, is it very expensive going to those places, i was hoping it might be cheaper, mind you i suppose not having to pay tax saves an awful lot of money so those kind of holidays would be mnore accessible!

Luckily the school supplies accommodation including bills, however first few months will be spent clearing debts over here!!! :(

yep you right with the travelling.. Every thing much closer from here.. may be not cheaper but definately much closer.

So far we have been to Thailand, Sri Lanka, Dubai, etc in the past two years thinking of doing Malaysia this summer..

Thanks guys, guess its going to be weird for a while at first but everyone like yourselves are really kind and helpful so that will help loads!

This will be my first working experience abroad and on my own so exciting and daunting at the same time, important to get to know people and the place!!

A good social life is important to me, hate staying in lol

So Bahrain rocks eh Mr Paul? Will have to put it on my list!!

Funny what you mum is saying.. Guess we Brit's are the only one's abiding by the rules...lol

There is plenty of social gatherings of Brits and other Europeans and antipedians across Doha. Doha Rugby Club House is the closiest you gonna get to have a drink with Brit Expats in surrounding which does look like a pub.

So don't worry we had the same fears when we got here, but with time one adjusts to this place. The place offers you alot all depends on what you want..

That's a real shame, it would have been nice to meet up with everyone for a social, guess there are bars that attract mostly Brits then? (although obviously i'm up for meeting lots of nationalities)

Lets hope someone takes up the offer of the job!!! I heard that Al Khor Compound is quite a laugh, the principal's wife told me that the teachers regularly get together and there is quite a bit going on, would be nice to venture into Doha to check out what's happening over there, the shops look amazing! (heh, i'm a girl lol)

My mum is petrfied i'm going to do something wrong, she keeps telling me to make sure i 'abide by their rules'!

By GodFather.• 9 Apr 2009 08:14

Aye there Paul.. No I am not up for the job as for now.. Guess I came to Doha when you was on the way to Bahrain.

Must say still visit the group regualary and get all the issues related to back home.

but if any of you want to take over the running of the Brit club, just PM me and i will make you an admin chap, cos obviously I cant organise anything anymore.

So UKeng, you up for the job ?

susanjohal.. Regarding the Brit Expatriates Group here on QL. I think it must be one of the least social group here.. or am I wrong? The manager of this Group now is in Bahrain only visits Qatar once a year.. They do not plan any social gatherings in Qatar as far as I know..

If you is gonna be based in Al Khor there is plenty to do there. I know a lot of Al Khorites and they really enjoy themselves..So you will be fine in Al Khor Compound.

But if you do come down to Doha on the weekend there is always a few places one can visit.

Nice one, you will be fine mate with that attitude.

See you when you get over here. I will be the one slumped

over the balcony at Qube, or being removed for attempting podium dancing 8-/

ah you speak the mother tongue Geoffrey, rave on....and on......and......on!

I am looking forward to it, I'm a lone travellor so keen to make friends, travel, have some fun and laughter and really enjoy the experience! Can't afford that over here (travel and fun, not friends, although i do believe there are exceptions to that rule!!)

And Geoffrey? I never take myself too seriously (hmmm oddly enough nor does anyone else :))

Ah now you are speaking my language although I am

a child of the rave culture, trance and plenty

of Cream, Bed, Gatecrasher etc.

Do look forward to it, don't come with any preconceptions

or prejudices, everyone is here for the same thing, despite all the whinging on these boards.

Some take themselves too seriously and need to jog on.

Hi there Geoffrey

well when i said 'music' i was referring to an injection of Drum n Bass, it'll open your eyes and make your innards rattle i can tell you, i thought a nice side dish of jerk chicken and rice to make the party go with a swing ha ha!!

Although maybe that wouldn't be wise as i would like to be in the country for more than 5 minutes!!!

Really looking forward to it!

Ay'up geoffers thanks for the reply! Well after reading that laughing too loudly was prohibited i did wonder how the land lay with bbqs and also with, dare i say it......socialising in groups with music playing!!

Glad to here its cool, didn't want to attract too many strange looks whilst spontaneously cooking carcusses in the great outdoors supping a rather large glass of vino!!!!

Although naturally, the burning, oh i mean the cooking will be left to the alfa males donning their pinnies with spatulas at dawn, i mean in hand, what a site to behold!! I look forward to it ;)

I'd like to know that, too! As for barbies, I'm out in Dukhan- similar deal- and it's BBQ Central.. no beer gardens:)

Ay'up Susan, Barbecuing is strictly forbidden, as is large groups of people "chilling".

Stay where you are!

Only joking, BBQ is all good and getting together with

many different nationalities, not just fellow Brits is

brill too.

Finally, stay away from the BBQ, that is mans domain,

cooking meat which you have hunted in the Supermarket,

over an open flame, in you french maids apron. Come on

is there anything more manly than that?
