Does this group cycle for competitive races only? If so are there any other groups particularly for those who have been away from sport for some time etc.

Also, are there any indoor tracks in Doha where one can simply bike on?

You should bring your mountain bike. The bike club Qatar Chain Reaction organizes regular mountain bike races. Info is posted on their website

www.qatarchainreaction.org

I believe the plan is to organize the first adventure race in Qatar for the coming fall. Road bikes are also in heavy use here. I would bring as much of my own parts as you can as the supply/selection here is limited.

HI THERE

I WILL LIKE TO KNOW PRICES OF CYCLES IN QATAR

First I will like to give little back ground about me

My husband has shifted to Qatar last week. I will be joining him in 3 - 4 months. We both love all adventurous activities including cycling. But I think we have to leave our cycles behind over here in India.

Thanks

I am waiting on the arrival of a new road bike, and will hopefully be joining the group rides.

I would recommend bringing your mountain bike, I've very much enjoyed cycling around some of the desert trails over the last couple of months.

I am an adventure racer and avid cyclist moving to Doha in January. I am also an intermediate bike mechanic bringing tools and a bike stand with me. I ride trails during races and a cruiser for fun. I assume a mountain bike would be quite useless out there unless I can get a coed team together for the Abu Dhabi 2010. I have never ridden a road bike, but I have always said I'd get one. I am guessing now would be a good time.

Is there a decent bike shop there to get parts, cables, lube, tubes, citrus degreaser, etc....

Is a mountain bike totally useless there? (IE, donate it to my current team and buy a road bike instead?) Though, I have been wanting one, just couldn't convince my wife I needed another bike.....

Is there anywhere in town to ride with my boy? (Other thant he corniche)? He's on a BMX and I'm rocking an Electra cruiser.

Thanks!

If anyone fancies this I will get to the Pearl Sculpture on the south side of the corniche by Souk Waqif traffic lights by 6:30 (5 is so early).

Bat there is a couple groups that get together and ride on the weekends (friday and saturday) yes there is gals riding also.

the AC bike path has not happened and most likely won't in the near future. It is just a idea and people got carried away with it.

which bike to bring is up to you. you can use both types here. I also have mountain bike and road bike.

cycling is allowed on the corniche road but not on the walking path. but there is cyclist riding there anyway. the corniche road is very busy most of the time and not fun to ride.

I ride here year round. yes it get's to hot for some but the wind is more painful I think.

Joeinqatar, you obviously have a good deal of knowledge on riding here.

What time do the rides head off on Friday/Saturday, golf course/corniche.

I am a keen cyclist, road and mountain bike. Just moved here three weeks ago and brought my road bike on the plane so can ride straight away.

It seems there are plenty of like minded cyclists on this thread and probably enough for a club. I'm no IT techy but if someone knows how to build a website to get people together it may be a good idea. In the meantime Joe/anyone else who wants to ride perhaps you would pm me call 344 7629.

Can do any weekend from 5th June onwards

Hi All,

I'm moving to Doha in August, I love cycling and have some questions that i really appreciate if anyone can help answering me:

- Are there cycling groups in Doha?

- Can women join?

- What happened with the airconditioned track project?

- I have a mountain and a race bike, which one should I bring with me? or bring both?

- Is cycling allowed on the corniche?

- When is the weather suitable for cycling? What months?

Thanks all :)

hi, am coming out to teach. Will be in Doha. Am really keen to join cyclists. That sounds really expensive to ship your bike out. I'm going to enquire about taking my bike with me when i fly out as excess baggage once I know what my airline is. Sound sto me that you should take both. If I had a mountain bike as well i would.

By Tucky• 10 May 2009 21:45

Most of them are a few hundred quid to ship both my mountain bike and my road bike out.

I'm still not 100% sure whether to bring both out, or just one?

It sounds like I could do a bit on the roads early morning.

Is there scope to take the mountain bike out around the Al Khor area?

Dorsetgirl - what are you doing out there and where?

A loop of 40 miles that I can do 3 times would work - but I need a decent shoulder or a place that isn't too busy

-There is a loop of about 43 miles betweeen the golf course and al khor with decent shoulder but busy the best bet early am on fridays and saturdays but the road is plenty big enough. and is rideable anytime. this is where most of the road riding takes place with local expats.

Is there such a thing as a "country road" near Doha?

-NO not like an american country road. there is roads out of town but there is a lot of big truck traffic early am on weekends are best bet again.

I am happy to "drive to ride" - that's the norm in NYC.

-One to two places I can think of that be good for this.

Is swimming in the ocean permitted?

-YES

Can women swim too?

-YES

Are there any lap pools?

-dont know

Maybe at the universities?

-dont know

When I train I usually wear the typical tri-outfit - is this going to be a problem?

-NO

What about for female trainers?

-NO problem either i dont think but be prepared for plenty of dudes staring at her. and she will feel uncomfortable I would think. I am not sure but seems like to me there is 500+ males per 1 female

just my opinions hope they help.

Paula1 and joeinqatar, thanks for the good information. I don't know yet when I'l be arriving, but if you are still here, I'd like to get together for a ride.

I am a hard core triathlete - and considering moving to Doha - I train about 20 hours per week - I've trained in Vegas during the summer, and while the heat isn't ideal, it is doable. I also train in New York City, and while the traffic and cars are not great - I've survived so far.

What I need is a stretch of road that is at least wide, if not quiet. I need to ride between 80 and 120 miles on the weekends. A loop of 40 miles that I can do 3 times would work - but I need a decent shoulder or a place that isn't too busy - Is there such a thing as a "country road" near Doha? I am happy to "drive to ride" - that's the norm in NYC.

Hi Southland,

Can you advise where the West Bay bike lane is. I moved here 7 years ago and have pretty well given up on biking (I mountain bike), but am thinking of trying to saddle up again. The recent article on the mountain bike race was encouraging. Maybe that trail is suitable. Anyone know where it was.

I posted this on another thread but I figured the visibility might get some good info:

I just finished a midnight drive over by West Bay. It looks like the bike lane is coming along nicely and should be a safe distance from the main road. I just wonder when it will be done and if there is a proposed map available. It should make for a pleasant ride with nice views. Kudos to the developers for putting it in the mix.

Hi,

I'm due to move out in August, and am quite a keen cyclist (mainly recreational, but compete in duathlons/triathlons, and am looking to get involved in time-trials this year).

My main question is, which bike do I bring out? My road bike, my mountain bike, or both?

How much would it cost to get a bike shipped/flown out there?

Also, would be keen to join any group rides when I arrive. I'll be based in Al Khor, if that's any help with my questions!

OKay so no biking for transpo.. haha after being here for less then 2 full days I can already see that would be less then safe, even horribly tragic?

Any how, I am stil wondering if anyone has an idea of where I could buy an affordable bike (as i am only here for a month) as well as any social rides happening?

I guess I am in the same boat as a lot of people here, but i am looking for a pal or two to hang out with. I am pretty normal where it counts, not looking for a hook up or anything, i've got a great girl at home. Just a friend outside of work to hang out with, do seemingly cheesy touristy things... camel races? biking? sandboarding (I can teach you if need be, i taught snowboarding for 3 years and i am sure its transferable)

blah blah... see you at the bike races this week!

Hmm. In Europe, I got on the bike (a mountain bike I put together myself out of the pars of six or seven different bikes) for all journeys less than 200km.

Really miss it, and have gained two stone in my new life as a car owning person...

however, I find bicycle commuting in Doha an impossibility. First of all, I have never ever seen a female cyclist, and suspect there could be a lot of hassle. Secondly, I have seen several times what was left from a cyclist after some bloody landcuiserist wiped the road with him. NOT pretty.

In short, it's OK if you want a hobby and go out of town to ride on weekends, but for just getting around, forget about it. Road safety is abominable, and then again how on earth do you make yourself presentable for the office after cycling there in 53 degrees celsius? : )

so the cooled cycle lane thing is a great idea but I cant see it realistically being done with all the major construction still going on in west bay etc cos the jets would last about a week before they get clogged. Just a couple of good old fashioned cycle lanes on the ring roads and downtown would make cycling here a little less suicidal though, no need for fancy airconditioning really...

Lindsay and others looking for the bike shop on salwa road its called Skate Shack and can be found on the left side just after Thursday Friday market turning; their number is 44692532 they sell Trek and Fisher ATBs and racers...

we should have a cyclists group here to report accidents and injustices, or positive events as well...

The pro race (tour of Qatar) is not a big deal here. yes they close the roads down while they race but very very few people go and watch. been for the last 2 years. It is mostly a sprinters race so some big name sprinters come here (Boonen and Petacchi). I have rode with the group on saturday's but the time they ride and the group wanting to ride paceline has made it hard for me to get up and go. they mostly ride from doha golf club to Al Khor and back. wide shoulders and no big trucks but still there is traffic and exhaust but it is close to town. If you want I can sumbit you for the fri/sat group ride email list

I live in Al Khor. Willing to drive to ride. So far I haven't really seen anything that would indicate that there is decent riding anywhere, but I haven't traveled around much yet. I know there is a pro race in january, but i'm guessing they close down the main highways as it's a pretty big event.

The one and only shop for road bikes was Skate Shack so far (Salwa Road, 2 or three roundabouts after decoration r/a you have to make a u-turn and there it is on the right hand side), and now Go Sports in Villagio also has some - but those imho are either sh.. or far too expensive.

lostboy where are you doing your early morning ride? I could ride on saturdays and sundays. I have both road and Mt. bike here. for those of you coming to doha soon I don't see the cooled path ever happening around the corniche. that area is the jewel of doha. there are 2 places that I know of that sell decent road bikes but $$$$$. My advise is mail your bike here! and make it a mt. bike. I have not seen any place to ride on the road safe in doha, there is some nice roads to ride out of town but you would need to drive and then ride.

Becca i started a thread about that a while back... from what i've heard they've pushed the completion date back quite a bit... if not totally scrapped the project

I'm up a cycle when I get to Doha! Where I live at the moment, it's my main form of transport.

Been reading about the proposed 'cooled' cycle path there, which sounds great, but not sure whether anything is happening with it.
