looking for somebody to ride with or any cycling club that will welcome me mail me at [email protected] thanks.
i am also looking the same...a cycling group for socializing and fun other than competitive races.. Or any one interested in starting a cycling group for socializing..
Does this group cycle for competitive races only? If so are there any other groups particularly for those who have been away from sport for some time etc.
Also, are there any indoor tracks in Doha where one can simply bike on?
I am new in doha...came just a week ago...i have mountain bike..please let me know how can i join this group.. Now i am living near airport.. please let me know

You should bring your mountain bike. The bike club Qatar Chain Reaction organizes regular mountain bike races. Info is posted on their website
www.qatarchainreaction.org
I believe the plan is to organize the first adventure race in Qatar for the coming fall. Road bikes are also in heavy use here. I would bring as much of my own parts as you can as the supply/selection here is limited.
HI THERE
I WILL LIKE TO KNOW PRICES OF CYCLES IN QATAR
First I will like to give little back ground about me
My husband has shifted to Qatar last week. I will be joining him in 3 - 4 months. We both love all adventurous activities including cycling. But I think we have to leave our cycles behind over here in India.
Thanks
QATAR CHAIN REACTION is pleased to announce our first Mountain Biking Festival this Friday, October 30th at Wadi Al Sail, Doha (a really nifty spot between the Fire Station (Civil Defense), Orx Roundabout and the Corniche). The first race starts at 830am, registration from 730am.
The Festival Categories are:
Weekend Warrior (~4km - 1 lap)
Ladies (~8km - 2 laps)

Masters - ages 40 and above (~16km - 4 laps)
Kids COURSE (~1km)
Helmets, gloves and eyewear are mandatory.
Hi XTFEUL,
Are there ladies in your groups? and what bikes do u use? road or mountain? I have Giant Mountain bike, i'm new here in Doha I got my bike with with me but didnt get the chance to ride it yet.. where do u reach from corniche?
plz reply asap i really miss cycling and i used to cycle with groups back home!
Thanks :)
I am waiting on the arrival of a new road bike, and will hopefully be joining the group rides.
I would recommend bringing your mountain bike, I've very much enjoyed cycling around some of the desert trails over the last couple of months.
I am an adventure racer and avid cyclist moving to Doha in January. I am also an intermediate bike mechanic bringing tools and a bike stand with me. I ride trails during races and a cruiser for fun. I assume a mountain bike would be quite useless out there unless I can get a coed team together for the Abu Dhabi 2010. I have never ridden a road bike, but I have always said I'd get one. I am guessing now would be a good time.
Is there a decent bike shop there to get parts, cables, lube, tubes, citrus degreaser, etc....
Is a mountain bike totally useless there? (IE, donate it to my current team and buy a road bike instead?) Though, I have been wanting one, just couldn't convince my wife I needed another bike.....
Is there anywhere in town to ride with my boy? (Other thant he corniche)? He's on a BMX and I'm rocking an Electra cruiser.
Thanks!

Friday 5:30 am opposite HSBC on Corniche fast + 100km

I'd love to join in on large cycling groups. However, not for another week or two as I need to finish up some work first. If it isn't too much of a hassle just keep sending me messages and updates on who's going when and I'll join in sometime.
Bat yes I do.
I will head out this Friday 5th June. Will go around the corniche, past the golf course and find a 30 mile or so loop. Hopefully back before the sun gets up! If anyone fancies this I will get to the Pearl Sculpture on the south side of the corniche by Souk Waqif traffic lights by 6:30 (5 is so early).
Cheers Rob
Thanks joeinqatar, appreciate it :)
Do you have contacts for these cycling groups?
Bat there is a couple groups that get together and ride on the weekends (friday and saturday) yes there is gals riding also.
the AC bike path has not happened and most likely won't in the near future. It is just a idea and people got carried away with it.
which bike to bring is up to you. you can use both types here. I also have mountain bike and road bike.
cycling is allowed on the corniche road but not on the walking path. but there is cyclist riding there anyway. the corniche road is very busy most of the time and not fun to ride.
I ride here year round. yes it get's to hot for some but the wind is more painful I think.
It all depends on time of year. right now it is meet around 445 and start at 500AM because of the heat. sounds like a good idea to get a website started. my days off are saturday and sunday. cheers
Joeinqatar, you obviously have a good deal of knowledge on riding here.
What time do the rides head off on Friday/Saturday, golf course/corniche.
I am a keen cyclist, road and mountain bike. Just moved here three weeks ago and brought my road bike on the plane so can ride straight away.
It seems there are plenty of like minded cyclists on this thread and probably enough for a club. I'm no IT techy but if someone knows how to build a website to get people together it may be a good idea. In the meantime Joe/anyone else who wants to ride perhaps you would pm me call 344 7629.
Can do any weekend from 5th June onwards
Rob
Hi All,
I'm moving to Doha in August, I love cycling and have some questions that i really appreciate if anyone can help answering me:
- Are there cycling groups in Doha?
- Can women join?
- What happened with the airconditioned track project?
- I have a mountain and a race bike, which one should I bring with me? or bring both?
- Is cycling allowed on the corniche?
- When is the weather suitable for cycling? What months?
Thanks all :)
Philb groups start real early and ride from the golf course parking lot and on the corniche on friday/saturday I will PM you more details
Hi Guys
I'm planning on bringing my race bike with me when Im working in Doha in a couple of weeks - would like to join the Friday and Saturday rides - can anyone let me know what times and from where they leave - Thanks for your help
hi, am coming out to teach. Will be in Doha. Am really keen to join cyclists. That sounds really expensive to ship your bike out. I'm going to enquire about taking my bike with me when i fly out as excess baggage once I know what my airline is. Sound sto me that you should take both. If I had a mountain bike as well i would.
Most of them are a few hundred quid to ship both my mountain bike and my road bike out.
I'm still not 100% sure whether to bring both out, or just one?
It sounds like I could do a bit on the roads early morning.
Is there scope to take the mountain bike out around the Al Khor area?
Dorsetgirl - what are you doing out there and where?
toxic_nurse the group has several girls riding too.
i would like to join if there is any cycling group out there for girls.
All is fair in love and war....????
Hi Tucky-did you get some good info about shipping your bike out? I too am coming out in August. Am a keen cyclist-done abit of timetrialling in my local club, and want to pursue the cycling as best I can when I'm in Doha. Also want to know about shipping my bike out.
A loop of 40 miles that I can do 3 times would work - but I need a decent shoulder or a place that isn't too busy
-There is a loop of about 43 miles betweeen the golf course and al khor with decent shoulder but busy the best bet early am on fridays and saturdays but the road is plenty big enough. and is rideable anytime. this is where most of the road riding takes place with local expats.
Is there such a thing as a "country road" near Doha?
-NO not like an american country road. there is roads out of town but there is a lot of big truck traffic early am on weekends are best bet again.
I am happy to "drive to ride" - that's the norm in NYC.
-One to two places I can think of that be good for this.
Is swimming in the ocean permitted?
-YES
Can women swim too?
-YES
Are there any lap pools?
-dont know
Maybe at the universities?
-dont know
When I train I usually wear the typical tri-outfit - is this going to be a problem?
-NO
What about for female trainers?
-NO problem either i dont think but be prepared for plenty of dudes staring at her. and she will feel uncomfortable I would think. I am not sure but seems like to me there is 500+ males per 1 female
just my opinions hope they help.
Paula1 and joeinqatar, thanks for the good information. I don't know yet when I'l be arriving, but if you are still here, I'd like to get together for a ride.
I am a hard core triathlete - and considering moving to Doha - I train about 20 hours per week - I've trained in Vegas during the summer, and while the heat isn't ideal, it is doable. I also train in New York City, and while the traffic and cars are not great - I've survived so far.
What I need is a stretch of road that is at least wide, if not quiet. I need to ride between 80 and 120 miles on the weekends. A loop of 40 miles that I can do 3 times would work - but I need a decent shoulder or a place that isn't too busy - Is there such a thing as a "country road" near Doha? I am happy to "drive to ride" - that's the norm in NYC.

trainers?
A second visit near the Qatari Diar Visitor Center confirms there is a path there.

Hi Paula
I would be interested in joining a cycling group in Doha. I will be working for Qtel for 6 weeks stating end of April, and am keen to maintain my fitness acquired over the winter. Is it possible to hire or borrow a bike?
Best regards
Robin
Interested on joining cycling group community.
I love cycling.... been cycling all around Doha since two years. i love it.... except some rash car drivers who has no respect for cycles...
not sure about renting roadbikes, but there is a big bike ride this friday here in doha 10 Apr 09 and I think they might have extra bikes for the ride. (see jim_g_in_qatar post above for the Bill Brown Ride)
Hi, it is possible to rent a Roadbike in Doha? Thanks :-)) Tom
I love to bike but am just some afraid of the cars. Is it safe to bike in Qatar.
Hi Eisha,
I want to bike here again. Any tips on where to go? Who goes with your group?
Hi Southland,
Can you advise where the West Bay bike lane is. I moved here 7 years ago and have pretty well given up on biking (I mountain bike), but am thinking of trying to saddle up again. The recent article on the mountain bike race was encouraging. Maybe that trail is suitable. Anyone know where it was.
I posted this on another thread but I figured the visibility might get some good info:
I just finished a midnight drive over by West Bay. It looks like the bike lane is coming along nicely and should be a safe distance from the main road. I just wonder when it will be done and if there is a proposed map available. It should make for a pleasant ride with nice views. Kudos to the developers for putting it in the mix.

hey we are 2 going for rides on fridays-theres many areas in the dessert you can go for hours.
if you want to join us this friday or any other then email me via this website
Carnegie Mellon in Qatar is hosting the 2nd Bill Brown Ride on Friday, 10-April-2009. Starting from the Doha Golf Course, there are three turnaround points --- Lusail (26km), Simaisma (46km), or Al Khor (68km). Registration forms can be found at:
http://www.qatar.cmu.edu/billbrownride/
Sign in begins at 7:30am, the ride will start at 8:00am, and there will be a buffet lunch at the golf course at 11:00am.
Last year, over 70 cyclists participated in the event. Come join the fun this year!
I have both and ride the road some and the dirt alot. No idea on shipping cost. company paid mine from the U.S.
Hi,
I'm due to move out in August, and am quite a keen cyclist (mainly recreational, but compete in duathlons/triathlons, and am looking to get involved in time-trials this year).
My main question is, which bike do I bring out? My road bike, my mountain bike, or both?
How much would it cost to get a bike shipped/flown out there?
Also, would be keen to join any group rides when I arrive. I'll be based in Al Khor, if that's any help with my questions!
bookmarking this.. because of the bike shops, been looking for a good bike for several weeks now..
[img_assist|nid=12867|link=none|align=left|width=|height=0]Nothing in life is to be feared. It is only to be understood.
there is another one near Ramada hotel. they are selling Specialized bicycle. but i forgot the name of the shop.Eriq G
OKay so no biking for transpo.. haha after being here for less then 2 full days I can already see that would be less then safe, even horribly tragic?
Any how, I am stil wondering if anyone has an idea of where I could buy an affordable bike (as i am only here for a month) as well as any social rides happening?
I guess I am in the same boat as a lot of people here, but i am looking for a pal or two to hang out with. I am pretty normal where it counts, not looking for a hook up or anything, i've got a great girl at home. Just a friend outside of work to hang out with, do seemingly cheesy touristy things... camel races? biking? sandboarding (I can teach you if need be, i taught snowboarding for 3 years and i am sure its transferable)
blah blah... see you at the bike races this week!

There are a few female cyclist living here in Qatar. but I agree Doha is not a place to sight see on a bicycle.
on Feb 8-10 is the very first ladies tour of Qatar. there will be 15 pro women cyclist teams riding 310 kilometres.
Hmm. In Europe, I got on the bike (a mountain bike I put together myself out of the pars of six or seven different bikes) for all journeys less than 200km.
Really miss it, and have gained two stone in my new life as a car owning person...
however, I find bicycle commuting in Doha an impossibility. First of all, I have never ever seen a female cyclist, and suspect there could be a lot of hassle. Secondly, I have seen several times what was left from a cyclist after some bloody landcuiserist wiped the road with him. NOT pretty.
In short, it's OK if you want a hobby and go out of town to ride on weekends, but for just getting around, forget about it. Road safety is abominable, and then again how on earth do you make yourself presentable for the office after cycling there in 53 degrees celsius? : )
Hello,
I am visiting Doha for a month and I need a bicycle, road, Xcountry, cruiser anything will do so long as it gets me around to see some of the city. If you have any suggestions please let me know.
Im also looking to join a social ride!
Is biking a reasonable mode of transportation in Doha? How safe is it to bike on the streets?
Thanks, and looking forward to seeing you all on wheels!
Jesse
Hey all, just arrived from Bahrain and looking for good route to ride off-road??? I had the most amazing service from the Skate Shack guys in Bahrain, they recommended I visit their branch here to get my bike re-assembled as soon as i get settled.
If there any mountain/trail bikers who have a group, then please let me know.
cheers
z.
Never tried, but its a healthy habit. seems fun .but i guess i need a good kick to start excecise regime . all the best to all, i may join someone fr morning.., but first i will need a byke
Want to meet some friends out there for a morning road biking from Alsadd to Corniche and etc..
email me at [email protected]
Zakalwe, thanks for the advise...and Lindsay, thanks for sharing your positive feedback on Skate Shack.
I'll be visiting the shop soon...
I go cycling every evening, starting at 6pm, i live by the mall, so that is where is my starting point; and i do not have a specif route to take so i am open for any suggestions from some one willing to join.
My email is kareem_salem at yahoo dot com
Thanks
Thanks Zakalwe for your advice and contact information in respect of Skate Shack - I can not speak highly enough about the prompt service and willing to assist of Malcolm and his Assistant. Any one seeking a Bike or anything associated with Cycling these folk will see you right based on my experience...
so the cooled cycle lane thing is a great idea but I cant see it realistically being done with all the major construction still going on in west bay etc cos the jets would last about a week before they get clogged. Just a couple of good old fashioned cycle lanes on the ring roads and downtown would make cycling here a little less suicidal though, no need for fancy airconditioning really...
Lindsay and others looking for the bike shop on salwa road its called Skate Shack and can be found on the left side just after Thursday Friday market turning; their number is 44692532 they sell Trek and Fisher ATBs and racers...
we should have a cyclists group here to report accidents and injustices, or positive events as well...
Dear Paula1
A native of New Zealand, I brought my road bike with me, but at the moment it is in the carton it was transhipped from Dubai in, and in a dissassembled state.
Can you help me please with a contact of a bike mechanic who could reassemble and set up my bike...and details of regular rides would be most appreciated.

The pro race (tour of Qatar) is not a big deal here. yes they close the roads down while they race but very very few people go and watch. been for the last 2 years. It is mostly a sprinters race so some big name sprinters come here (Boonen and Petacchi). I have rode with the group on saturday's but the time they ride and the group wanting to ride paceline has made it hard for me to get up and go. they mostly ride from doha golf club to Al Khor and back. wide shoulders and no big trucks but still there is traffic and exhaust but it is close to town. If you want I can sumbit you for the fri/sat group ride email list
hey how's it going?
My name is Sean and I just put together my road bike and am wondering about riding groups as the weather begins to cool down a bit. Interested about that fri/sat group you mentioned. I live in Al Khor. Willing to drive to ride. So far I haven't really seen anything that would indicate that there is decent riding anywhere, but I haven't traveled around much yet. I know there is a pro race in january, but i'm guessing they close down the main highways as it's a pretty big event.
firstly i need to learn how to ride the darn bicycle....:P
life's too short so make the most of it, you only live but once.......
who can do slow cycling?
[img_assist|nid=73057|title=.|desc=|link=none|align=left|width=|height=0]
It's called Sports Corner. I would love to join the Cycling club please.
there is another sport shop that sells specialized bikes. its located along salwa road, across the centre mall. they sell road bikes, mountain bikes, gears, and jerseys. i forgot the name of the shop but its near beijing chinese restaurant.
hey there...im intresred in riding....i've been here for almost a year now but this is the first time that i saw people who are in cyling...weel the weather here is extremely hot but i dont mind....hope to see you all soon...im planning to assemble my road bike soon..
"life is short...go surfing"
well i m interested iin cycling , i have a mon. bike , but i didnt use for a long time , hhope i will use it again .
contact me
Tamumech, thanks for the info. Shame to hear the cycle path has been 'pushed back' ...hmmm. But it sounds like there's enough bikers in Doha.
If any of you wants a contact for a road biking group, please pm me...there is a group which goes cycling every friday and saturday and they have a distribution list.
The one and only shop for road bikes was Skate Shack so far (Salwa Road, 2 or three roundabouts after decoration r/a you have to make a u-turn and there it is on the right hand side), and now Go Sports in Villagio also has some - but those imho are either sh.. or far too expensive.
lostboy where are you doing your early morning ride? I could ride on saturdays and sundays. I have both road and Mt. bike here. for those of you coming to doha soon I don't see the cooled path ever happening around the corniche. that area is the jewel of doha. there are 2 places that I know of that sell decent road bikes but $$$$$. My advise is mail your bike here! and make it a mt. bike. I have not seen any place to ride on the road safe in doha, there is some nice roads to ride out of town but you would need to drive and then ride.
Becca i started a thread about that a while back... from what i've heard they've pushed the completion date back quite a bit... if not totally scrapped the project

I'm up a cycle when I get to Doha! Where I live at the moment, it's my main form of transport.
Been reading about the proposed 'cooled' cycle path there, which sounds great, but not sure whether anything is happening with it.
i'd be interested when i arrive in doha... are there any places to buy road bikes in doha?

Hi,
In country four weeks now and a keen road cyclist, any body else out there up for an early morning ride?
