All new season of Qatar Stars League kicks off with much fanfare
The much awaited Qatar Stars League has begun.
The Qatar Stars League (QSL) is the highest professional league in local football, with the first season dating back to 1963.
The new season started off on the 11th of September with 14 teams set to go head to head:
Al Arabi, Mesaimeer, Al Ahli, Al Gharafa, Al Kharaitiyat, Al Khor, Al Sadd, Al Sailiya, Al Wakrah, El Jaish, Lekhwiya, Umm Salal and Al Rayyan.
Al Sadd SC club kicked off the season as the leaders on the championship table.
This club has won the most number of championships at the QSL – a total of 12 so far.
There is good money in the league here – an award system was developed in 2006, which recognises the best player and coach of the season.
Each award winner receives $100,000, and there are also awards for youth players and club staff.
Hani Ballan, CEO of QSL, said that this season has seen a gradual increase in the number of spectators attending the league matches, which was one of their main aims.
More spectators are estimated with the increase in the level of quality and competition among the clubs.
Mansoor Al Ansari, General Secretary of Qatar Football Association, is also keen to see more fans in the stands which will make this a great season.
“We will provide fans and guests of all ages a wide range of community, educational, cultural and fan-engaging activities.”
So are you one amongst the spectators this season?
