TURNED DOWN DUE TO HIGH SALARY DEMAND

Salaam Alequum, my friends in QatarLiving!!!

I have a simple question, and if you can please post a reply I would be very thankful to you!! I know you are very very busy in your life schedule and hardly have the time for yourself, so I will be very gratelul to you if you can post a reply to this posting!!

I am a Canadian citizen working as Program Manager / Portfolio Manager / IT Manager in the IT industry in Canada and USA in last 15+ years. I had a recent interview with one of the very reputed telecom companies based in Doha (after hard efforts of almost two months as I do not know the way IT recruiting happens in Qatar). I had demanded a monthly salary of USD X and the final negotiations came to my salary. I was told my take-home salary would include base salary PLUS many other allowances. But that is not the way we get here in USA and so I could not probably understand what is House Allowance or Car Allowance or Children's Education Allowance etc etc, we pay that out of our wallet here in USA and Canada. I stuck to what I demanded as my base salary thinking ultimately I would pay from my pocket and those allowances would mean nothing.

I was finally declined because of high demand on monthly base salary. After one round of telephonic and one round of video interview I was not expecting it to end like this! I of course bowed out gracefully but it was the only interview I ever got from Qatar or Dubai. My question to you is -- What should I demand as monthly base salary and whether USD 17000 per month too high to demand when I am making USD 24,000 per month now?

I will love to hear what ever your opinion is. Please understand I have know NO KNOWLEDGE of salary range offered in the GCC nations, but I know after three more months will be working for some company there. Please can you give me your opinion?

If this is too tough a question for you, please do let me know. I wish I had someone to guide me, but as they say, if wishes were always granted, we will forget the Divine!

Thank you, Mary! Your know the situation quite well!! Thank you, Acchabaccha for your suggestions, I did try all that very well but neither can I change the weather pattern of Canada nor can I change the lifestyle of people in Canada. To Molten Metal I can only say that it is not at all true that 'It is a known fact the old Asian parents are not given due respect by their grand children in the US, UK Aus, & Can. It means comparatively very less respect , when compared with their counter parts in the Asia." Human relations are not built the way you understand them. It is not easy to understand what a Mother actually sacrifices for her children. God bless you with better wisdom, is all I would say!!!

You were right to stick to your base salary demands. However, times have changed here in the past 7 - 10 years and salaries have not kept pace with the times. The organization will hire someone who is willing to be lowballed and will get the commensurate effort and expertise.

It is a known fact the old Asian parents are not given due respect by their grand children in the US, UK Aus, & Can. It means comparatively very less respect , when compared with their counter parts in the Asia. That's why old people wish to go back to Asia.

Noor, When we are in a situation like this we must give 3 years time to decide on it. Ask dear Mom what is her dislikes there ?Try to get the minute info. We can resolve the disturbing points one by one beginning with the serious one. This is common with the older people to have difficulty to accept the changes in the place, weather, life style, food, languages, hair style - dress style of the host country. Ask your family members to spend 30 - 45 minutes as special time with her, share what has happened in the office, road, parking etc. This will be entertaining for her. Take her out to the families parks, cook the food of her choice. I am 100 % - One hundred percent sure she won't object to any of the older points. You won't need to leave Can for Qat.

Dear Acchabaccha, I do understood that, yes it takes all types of people to make this world! Very very true!!

@Molten - For any person in this world, the bond with mother is NEVER weak, all other relations come much later - Mother is the one who is unique among all others one knows in the later life - no one in the world or beyond can ever take her position!

Accha, We must diagnose the case deeply with a clear heart , only then we would be able to say something on it.

.

You see the reason to move is very-very weak. You are spoiling his future life plus his family won't be happy either with this step which is being taken in the backward direction.

Koh-i-Noor: This is possibly the first time you have posted at QL. As such, you don't know Molten Metal yet. The person just posts as there is a great desire to be the first one to post since this allows the name to be visible on the QL page. Molten Metal has been doing this for six years now with many posts being misinformation, misguides and false promises. Just go through a QL page on a single day and see for yourself.

Hi Acchabaccha,

Thank you very much for your valuable response. Yes, it was my mistake not to have come to this forum before the negotiations started. But before the phone call I was not informed that the package would be discussed so much in detail in the call. You are absolutely correct that salary and benefits of two countries cannot be compared because the cost of living and the income tax rates vary apart from other very important aspects of living in any country. I will research more and find out an appropriate range I should stick to. Thanks again for your response!

@Molten Metal - My dear friend, it is not about going up or down on a salary scale, I have been trying to move to the Gulf countries since some time now though I have been a Canadian citizen for more than ten years and my family is happily settled here. My aged mother came here and did not like Canada at all, she left and returned back to India. I must be in some place close to her. I am decided about moving to the Gulf, no questions about that. If need be I will accept a job at a much lower salary but I shall move. I have tried India and I will not try India again.

Molten: Just try to READ and UNDERSTAND what he is stating in the 3rd paragraph of his post before raising YOUR objections which I do not care about.

Accha, I strongly object to your input, my dear pal.

He said '' .....USD 17000 per month too high to demand when I am making USD 24,000 per month now?...''

Walaykum Salaam.

First of all you have posted a query after you have lost an opportunity. Had you asked for the opinion of QLers while negotiations were taking place, I guess you may not have lost an opportunity that came down your way.

In Qatar and also in several ME countries, a take-home pay comprises of several things. First of all there is the basic salary. This is the salary that is used by employers to calculate End of Service Benefits of any employee. House rent, Car allowance, Children's education allowance are perks added to the basic salary which makes the take-home pay swell a bit. As such, at the end of the month what you will get is your basic salary+house rent+car allowance+children's education allowance. It is all up to the employee how he goes about spending what he receives and what he saves. Having said that, most workers here do not get an allowance such as children's education allowance. The salary of most workers here comprises of basic+house rent+transport allowance. Any perks other than that is all up to an individual's capacity of how much he can manage to get out from his employer while he is negotiating. Even when a package of say of 10,500 Riyals is agreed upon between the employer and the employee, this package is broken down by the employer in a way such as: Basic salary QR 6000 + House rent QR 4000 + Transport allowance QR 500. The employer tries to keep the basic salary low as that would be the base salary used to calculate ESB.

Lastly, you cannot compare the terms of employment of USA, Canada or any other country to that of Qatar or any country in the ME. Each country has is own set of rules and regulations, systems and laws for running the affairs of the country smoothly.

Trust this is helpful.
