Query re: shipping/relocation allowance
I have received a job offer that includes a shipping allowance (reimburseable). It's quite reasonable, I don't have a problem with it in respect of the amount.
However, I don't fancy going through the pain of packing and shipping and then waiting for weeks and then clearing boxes and boxes of my personal effects (also I'm planning to rent out my apartment back home as a furnished apartment, so I don't need to bring all my worldly possessions with me).
Does anyone know if it's possible to renegotiate the shipping allowance and get some kind of relocation allowance so I can purchase stuff upon arrival?
Otherwise, I'm going to end up with a relatively generous shipping allowance that I don't want or need to use, and yet end up out of pocket for setting myself up in my new place in Qatar; I don't want to be spending most of my first month's salary on setting myself up.
At the moment, I'm intending to bring out with me a couple of suitcases with clothes and personal effects, and only ship out a box of books. If I only ship out the bear minimum, is it possible to get the rest of the allowance transferred as some kind of 'signing on/setting up' allowance?
Would it be reasonable of me to try to negotiate some kind of mobilisation/relocation allowance, if so how should I refer to it in my request "mobilisation" "relocation", is there a standard term that companies tend to use for this kind of thing?
What's the consensus of opinion here?
What are other people's experiences?
Many thanks in advance for your comments.
