Hello—

I have been offered a position as a visiting professor

(3-year contract) at one of the universities in Education

City.

The pay is about $78K (USD)

+ 0ver $13K for summer research & conferences

+ $5K for an annual flight home

+ furnished housing (the places mentioned have been spoken

of well on this forum)

+ car allowance

+ medical/dental/life insurance via the US university package

+ reimbursement for selling my car here below market value

+ shipping and storage of my goods here

+ moving expenses, including shipping my books

I am single and have 2 cats, whose travel, they have

told me, they will arrange.

I have some questions:

Will this salary allow me to save money?

What is vet care like? (My cats are old)

Can I get special/vet-prescribed cat food?

(Hills k/d & i/d or a local or European equivalent)

What is meant by modest dress for women?

(I have an east-coast based summer wardrob, which

(I think will not cut it--spaghetti straps and tank tops... )

I suffer from Migraines--will I be able to get pain medication?

(including opiates for the worst attacks)

Can I live as a semi-vegetarian? (I like to cook, am well-versed in

(and fond of other than American cuisines, and eat fish;

(I eat meat rarely, and only if it is not produced by factory farms)

Can I use skype to talk to my mother on a regular basis?

I will be visiting next week to make sure I like it--are there

any things I should make sure to check into while I am there?

Many thanks.

Hi State,

My husband just recently accepted a job offer there.  With the figures shown above, yes indeed you'll definitely  be able to save up some money.  But it also depends on the status of your lifestyle.  Just remember that more money could either be "more savings" or "more spending."  So, it's all up to you.  Goodluck.

I would say as a single semi vegetarian you will do  great here.

Me and my familiy used to live in US  and I am vegan .

My honest opinion is that you will be able to save much better than US,you will be tax free since you are making under 85k and everything is paid and handled. Also I am using Skype to talk to my family back in US ,the connection is great (it takes sometimes a month to get you internet if you don't have it yet in the villa).

I also bought a wireless skype  phone and it can be used any place in the house  incase you are  expecting a call and you don't want to sit and wait infront of the computer,it cost less than $50 and it's worth it.

Can't say much about vet doctors, don't have any pets yet,but there are lots of people with cats and dogs over here. Some useful websites:http://dohavets.com/

About vegie foods...There are  so many varieties of friesh fruits and vegetables and the prices are much cheaper than US.There is a nice vegetable market  which is even cheaper than the stores.

Unfortunately there isn't a lot of organic food, very difficult to find and prices are ridicilous.American brands are as twice more than the US ,but you will find great European or local products .

Dress code is not as strict as you think,I am sure you will be fine here the way you are .

I hope you enjoy your experience in Qatar!

Good luck and if you ever need any help or you have any question, don't hesitate to send a message!
