Hi,

I'm a Canadian, considering an offer from a company in Doha. Basic salary QR 17,000 pm+ house rent of about QR 12,000 + QR 2,000 for transport allowance and all other benefits like school, furniture etc. There is no allowance for telephone, water, electricity etc.

I want to save atleast QR15,000 pm (this is what I save in Canada now). We are a family of three. Do you think this is offer is good and can I save that kind of money.

Please advise and help.

Regards,

infact i know that as per my experience and position here in india, the offered salary and grade is bit less. i am expecting 15 grade and 15000 basic so that i can work here with satisfaction for some years without thinking of again moving elsewhere. but then there is fear of not availing this opportunity. earlier also in similar situation i didnot accept koc offer. so i thought of negotiation so not to regret later. please comment.

Negotiation is always hard bargain and in the process you may loose out as well.If you are keen to come on whatever is offered, then you are not getting an increase on this figure. Go for broke and try it if you like.

Sorry, I have never answered that question directly-whats is a good salary. It depends on your self-worth and your knowledge of local market. Since you dont know the local market, read through the threads and try to compare salaries at positions similar to yours. If you believe you are given a raw deal test the waters. Again if you are keen to come, negotiations wont help much.

Qatar is getting friendlier and there are more avenues to spend every day.You can save around 12K for sure. If you are targetting 15K savings(which is ambitious), Deduct 2-3K for the Comfort/fun factor. Since you wont have a great social life Why not spend a bit on weekends, dinings, outings and splurging?? After all you would want to save with fun.

If you really want to save 15K, Find a housing not more than 8-9K . That will save you 15K.

I think accomm. was included, wasn't it.

We buy some of our food very cheaply, just by going to the wholesale markets once a week.

Eating out - it depends where you eat out - we go to our local Indian restaurants and three of us can have a good meal for 30 riyals. Even the pricer restaurants are nowhere near as expensive as the U.K.

Still, I think saving 15,000 would be a bit optimistic.

are they paying for your yearly passage home with family, thats a huge expense, keep note of it, and try to include it in you package, cos most companies do include it.

in my opinion, if u take a 3 bed flat, u may pay 7000-8000riyals, if u take a spacious villa, which i presume you may prefer, you may use up all you house allowance of 12000. your 2000 will go in your car loan.

depending on your food style catch 500 per week, since you have a kid and if u like eating out, so you need to keep 2000 just for food, groceries/eating out.i am giving you smaller figures, assuming at a time you may spend 300/week for groceries, eating out permeal would be 100, so if you keep that for weekend, say 200, that approximates 500 per week.

i have not even started with the telephone bills, water, electricity, petrol bills, vacations, air tickets, shopping for kids and just maintaning a good lifestyle here .at this rate saving the whole of 15000 looks dicey, maybe if you can save some out of the house allowance you receive.

hope some others give their figures too, the food related figure are my personal experiences.

For a family of 5 ? you will be spending on basics anywhere from 3K to 5K QR/m, depends also how old the kids are. So, assuming that most of the allowances will eventually be spent, saving 15KQR/month will be very tight.

Besides savings money, you must analyze the other reasons that bring you here? your future fiscal status, resident/non-resident? adventure? are you from this region? are you tired of the West? or of your current job? looking for advancement in your career? do you have a wife or no wife? wife will be staying home? are you gonna own 2 cars?

Is the offer OK ? that is a difficult one to answer when the job description and your credentials are not given.

Visit also http://www.qatarliving.com/qatar-forum/forums/salary-ranges-in-qatar, the issue has been discussed in length. Good luck !
