The Final Offer

By Darryl One

Hi everybody!

I happened to see Doha last week for my scheduled interview and I find the country very interesting. I have not worked in any GCC countries but I think I could fairly handle the different nationalities, the driving attitude, and the weather in Qatar.

Anyway, I would like to seek your help as I just got a final offer from one of the companies in Doha. I would be working as a Store Specialist.

Monthly Package: QR 24,000 (all-in)
Monthly Telephone Allowance: QR 500
Furniture Allowance : QR 18,000 (one-time allowance)
Car Loan: QR 65,000 (Zero Interest, 4 years payment)
Educational Assistance: QR 12,000 (per kid per annum)
Annual Airfare Ticket, 2-way, including wife and kids.

My monthly package, especially the basic pay, is not relatively big. Well, i should know-I am a Qatar Living Reader and I am aware of the other major expenses to manage like housing and groceries..but then I am just thinking of the other benefits being offered. Frankly, I cannot have these benefits in my country!

While I am on the positive side to accept this offer, I still wanted to hear your usual comments/advise if we could survive in Qatar. By the way, my wife is a preschool Montessori teacher. I believe she could also land a job in Doha.

Thank you.

Yes, heero. More than a little... :)

I guess you are already familiar on how a typical Filipino lives in Doha.

Congratulations for having some Filipino friends!

You're a Philippino. You should know what to do with that amount...according to my Philippino friends.

Thanks, Vegas. I am considering to initially share a flat/apartment.

By the way, I forgot to tell you guys that I have a sister and brother in-law working in HMC and Clinic for 4 years now, so adjustment would not be that hard.

Thanks, birdie. I appreciate your reminders.

I will not be discouraged. I've been reading QL everyday and I could almost see the different 'profiles' of people..but hey, it's okay. We could actually learn from them.

As I said, different nationality different culture. We should be flexible/adaptable.

I am also thinking that I could still 'save a little' from my QR24K.

Thanks much!

Thanks, Vegas, I will try to check if there are still 'good-conditioned' used cars from the dealers.

Hi heero, why unbelievable for a Filipino??

Hi kimd, they call the educational money being provided as educational allowance, assistance or support. This is totally different from the offer being given by other companies where they would answer almost 100% of school fees.

I believe that in GCC countries there are different packages for different nationalities...and I accepted that fact already.

The company knows that I am from The Philippines, they would not expect me to enroll my kids in some Western schools.

Hope PSD and PISQ are still accepting.

Thanks much!

"Fairly unbelievable for a Philippino"

why do you think its unbelievable...heero?

Hi cynbob, yes, I am from the Philippines.

Re my car arrangement, I think the zero-interest loan fro the company is still something worth considering. At the end of the day, I will be needing a car, it is a necessity in Doha. If company would pay say 60% of the amount of car, that would leave me just financing 40%. The lower the principal loan, the lower the monthly installments with interest.

Well, you're correct, fairly a good deal compared to what I am receiving today.

Thanks much!

Hi dweller, the Filipino friends whom I visited in Doha last week told me about the sunny weather in Qatar during summer.

I just said I could handle the heat in Doha thinking that I am used to feel a temperature of 38-40degC in our country during summer time.

By the way, what particular months would be sunny in Qatar?

Thanks much for your comments!

Thanks, Loulsy...I guess I just need to find a decent 2-bedroom apartment as I will be bringing my wife and 2 kids.

There are so many info in QL that the rents are going down. Is it really happening now?Anyway, hope I could find in Doha a 2-bedroom apartment for QR 5K-6K.

Thanks again!

it is one of the British Schools over here, Check them out and you will see I am telling the truth.

My thoughts are my own, but I doubt my Mum would agree with some of them.

in QL society, you can see mostly "high profile" snobbies, who stay none other than a villa wth swimming pool, a Mercedez , children with British curriculum.

you should take advice from your own people. There is PSD-Philipine school of Doha, which may not be running like a "blade company" to squeeze the parents !!!

In a society, there are spaces for each class of population. I am sure, with QR.24,000 you can lead a better life than what you do in Philipines. Also earn a good saving

I tell you all these, since I know several Philipine families

But just know you can't change your mind...

And if you have that car loan you can't leave...

Unlees you pay it off...So buy a cheap used car...

So many get stuck cause of the car...

I wish British Schools were that cheap. We pay 75,000 Riyals per year plus we pay extra for books.

My thoughts are my own, but I doubt my Mum would agree with some of them.

You have not mentioned number of your children and which classes they are in? QQR 12000/ is fees per term (3 month) in most of british schools. American school is more expensive.

go for it and good luck.

QR12,000 per child isn't enough for school fees, most decent Western style primary schools charge 25,000 + per year nowadays and the fees for 2009/2010 haven't been announced yet.

I think at first glance, it looks semi-impressive.

Your car arrangement, really means nothing because you're going to have to make car payments. They are not providing you with a vehicle.

Rent is very high here. Perhaps you've done some research as to what that will cost you and your family. (The first thing I noticed was that they were not providing housing). You should try to find something close to where you work if your salary permits.

Your info says you're from the Philipines, so maybe this is a good deal. The cost of living decently is high: groceries; eating out; movies; entertainment

Good luck with your decision.

Avid, he said 24k was his MONTHly allowance..am i missing something?

By anonymous• 31 Mar 2009 20:36

For that money unless you are seriously underpaid in your own Country. 24K all in, take off 6-10K for house. 1K for car loan. Living at least 2-4K +++++

Unless you share a bed space live like and live like a monk don't bother. I am sic of people encouraging other people to come to a Country like Qatar for such pitiful money.

Hey it sounds real good.. go for it.. i mean as long as u and ur wife can handle budgeting and all.. u can live pretty comfortably.. as long as ur not aiming at having a huge top class residence you could put off a good amount of saving.. rents are going down u just have to be patient and look around.. for example.. there is an accomodation complex in Al Sadd area.. which is considering kinda in the heart of doha.. a 3 bedroom appartment (2 bedrooms of which are master bedrooms) with a "guest" bathroom a kitchen, and a living area fully furnished for 9000 QR.. i mean if u go for soemthing like that.. so u can find less bedrooms if needed for less rent..

Your wife can begin applying from now.. i mean she's a Montessori preschool teacher.. just today i saw in the Gulf times vacancies at Montessori school in Doha so she could transfer..
