Compensation question - Appreciate your input

Hello all,

I am about to get an offer in Qatar from my current employer. My employer is a Fortune 50 company based in the US. I am also based in the US. I currently draw a base salary of US$100K (no bonus). Since I want to move for long-term, I am expecting a local package. My position will be a sales & distribution role with 2-3 sales managers reporting to me and responsibilities covering 6 ME countries (excluding UAE and KSA).

I have over 7 years of consulting/engineering/management experience (all in the US) with companies like Schlumberger, Ericsson, and with my current employer. I hold an MBA and 2 MS degrees from top US Schools. I am 34 and married with one kid.

Based on my profile what should be a reasonable compensation package in Doha, Qatar?

Kind regards,
Zamindaar

Dear friends,

I truly appreciate your input and wish you all the best in life. Your responses have provided a benchmark to compare my offer against and make a more informed decision.

Kind regards,

Zamindaar. If you are moving with your current employer. They will likely (if they are reputable) offer you a good package as you would then be a direct hire working for your parent company in a foreign company. It is in their interests to keep you happy!

Zamindaar, it would have helped if you have mentioned the name of your employer. From the description its seems to be a multinational company and your case in my openion will be a relocation instead of a barnd new job. So, using the logic of relocation, I would top you existing salary by 40 % or more. This will put you in 140,000 $US anually. I will exclude childern education from the above (that is it should be paid seprately) and I would try to deal in such a way that instead of taking rent from the employer, negotiate for a Villa (fully paid by the employer, since rents are amazing in Qatar, for a 3 bed semi furnished villa you can expect to pay from 14,000 QR onward per month. So, if you get housing from the empolyer then a salary of 25'000 - 30'000 will be a good package exluding your anual return tickect to USA.

Hope this helps.

You should definitely discuss the school fees for your kid. Schools are not cheap here - nursery or grade school $$$. I think 20,000 - 25,000 riyals per month is a little low, even with housing, car and flights paid for.

I will say not less 20,000- 25,000 QR assuming that your employer will provide you with housing, car and a round trip for you and your family.

Also, you should discuss the school fees for your kid.

I will also assume that your montly pay in the us is something like 6,000 $ after taxes. Which means you can technically be making the same money here and not having to pay for housing, which in my opinion will result in more savings.
