We are US Citizens. Husband offered QR 55000 per month (all inclusive). Its a senior position. Title is Design Manager (infrastructure/highways). We have 3 school going kids and a infant. We maintain a decent life style with some savings in USA. Please advise if we accept the offer? Consider kids education in english speaking school and villa housing in a decent neighborhood in your advice. Thanks y'all in advance.

The waiting lists for the better English schools are up to a thousand students long. Many kids just don't get admitted to one of their top three choices. The alternative is to homeschool or enroll in a less qualified school and wait. And wait. And wait. Plus, I lived in New York. Doha is more expensive. And please realize that there is NO job security here. No retirement. No health care that extends beyond free clinics in Qatar. No life insurance. You're offer is OK but not breathtaking. It should be 25% more than he's making in the US plus all benefits on top of that.

Thanks y'all. I found some solid info through y'all. @Aussiepaki, my husband has 15 years experience in the design of highways, freeways. All his experience is in USA. Based on what you said, sounds like a terrific offer. Why is it hard to get kids enrolled in schools? Is there any demand and supply issue? What is the alternative if we move there and kids don't get admitted in school? This is just unheard of. Any opinion fellows?

Hi yusraarifa, I think your husband's pay offer is good but not great (assuming he has around 20 years experience or more; if he has less than 20 years, its awesome salary). I am a civil engineer too, and know quite a few design managers working on roads & infrastructure projects. The salary is in the same ballpark as your husband's, varying from 50k to 65k per month. If your husband wish to discuss anything about Qatar's work in the field of roads / infrastructure, feel free to send me a PM.

For a big family like yours, monthly expenses can be something like:

Rent - 15k - 18k for 4 bedroom unfurnished villa in decent area of Doha

Food - 4k

School Fees - 3k per child

Utilities - 1k

Rest should be easy saving. However, a few things you need to worry about. Weather is terrible, and its difficult to get admission in schools.

Cheers

If US$5,000 Savings is Good for you then you and your family should considered coming here in Qatar.

Life here is as simple and decent as you want it to be.

Very family-friendly country.

If you want to be out of a fast-phased life environment then this is the place to be.

With the package they are offering, I am sure you would be surprised with what you would experience.

In other side of the coin, if you preferred to have your kids in a very good educational system then comparing to USA then this is a disadvantage.

GOOD LUCK IN YOUR DECISION MAKING!!

CHEERS.. =)

I think shifting QATAR is good for you. this salary package is not bad. kids education also get the same standard. Main thing is QATAR is a growing economy in the world and more pieceful than US. Wish you good luck..

It's a quite reasonable offer. Very few people get this kind of offers. You can save as well.

Lifestyle in Qatar is very good (some people may differ with me).

Still if your husband can negotiate upto 60k, then it's good.

Housing 14000- 16000 (good 3 bed room accomodation)

Education 2500 per kid (average)

Utilities 1000 (average)

Good Luck!

Heard accommodation eats good chunk of money. What you said is contrary to what I've heard. Please clarify. Thanks much.

Thank y'all for response. My husband is trying to negotiate for 60k but have not heard anything from them yet. We want to relocate to Qatar so we can live closer to extended family. At the same time we woe like to maintain a decent life style along with kids education in English. Also, company would only pay for couple's health insurance and would like us to pay kids insurance through company's group plan. Any idea how much would thAt be?i it will be a 5 to 7 years contract. We want to make sure when we return we have some savings in hand. Any idea how much we shod put aside for housing, education and living. Your response will greatly be appreciated.

What you're being offered yusraarifa is really good a deal. Even if you consider the 3 of your kids going to school all at once, it wouldnt be much of a problem with the salary your getting. Even if you have a car, gas here is cheaper than water so there wont be any problem. Food and accommodation will also be accounted for and will only eat a fraction of your salary in total. Good Luck! :)

Yusraarifa, it is good but depends on the company you are working for, salaries of rest of colleagues, benefits paid or given correspondent to years of experience and working hours in additional for how many days off a week, also do not forget if it for a consultant or a contractor. Continuous position will paid like this but only 2 years you have to rethink before moving a complete family especially that schools are expensive and life is international prices. If wanted let me check for you the company.

i am Structural Engineer, and my Design Manager is getting around 30000 QR plus Car with Driver, Plus House Allowance plus some Hidden benefits and he is from India :-)

so i think your Pay is good but not great.

Life in Qatar compare to Life in USA, Dude you must be kidding if you are comparing, stick to your job if you have no issues with that there, as the education(Basic/Foundation) of your Children is priority and same level you may never get here in Qatar,

and about Pay, considering your Position yes it is not that bad, but still i think you deserve more then this, and it is practical here,

Why you thinking of Moving here anyway?? just asking caz you may have some reasons??
