Garangao is one of Qatar's most special and firmly rooted heritage. Children under the age of 12 honor this tradition by getting rewarded to make it halfway through the Holy month. It is celebrated on the 14th night of Ramadan when kids dress up in traditional clothes, chant songs, and go about the neighborhood collecting a variety of goods, sweets, and nuts.

In Qatar, it's far stated to be rooted within the pearl-diving lifestyle of the Gulf nation. Garanago events in Qatar in 2022 are being celebrated with pomp and zeal owing to a more normal Ramadan after two years of the pandemic.

Did you know?

Garangao is unique in the Gulf region, especially in Qatar.  The name "Garangao" or "Gargee'aan" comes from the Gulf word "Gara," which means "the sound of items hitting together," such as the sound of nuts and sweets in bags being carried around the necks of children. It's an old family tradition that has been passed down through generations.

The event has grown in popularity over the years, with countless expatriates taking part in the festivities. This annual ritual is similar to Halloween but without the ghosts and scary stories!

If you visit Qatar at this time, you may see some children engaging in this historic practice.

Where to join in on the festivities?
