Garangao 2023 in Qatar: All you need to know
One of the important days celebrated as a part of Ramadan in the GCC, and especially in Qatar, is Garangao. It is known by many names in different Gulf states. Also known as Girgaoon in Qatar, it falls on the 14th night of Ramadan and is celebrated by the kids in the community for making it halfway through the Holy Month. Garangao has been celebrated for many decades in Qatar and still continues to be a time of much joy and fun for children in Qatar.
History of Garangao
The word Garangao is derived from the word ‘gara’, which is a term used to describe the sound of sweet-carrying iron pots clanging against each other while serving sweets. In Qatar, the origins of the festival are believed to date back to the tradition of pearl diving. However, in recent years, many expatriates have also joined the locals in Garangao celebrations, making it an exciting time for kids in Qatar.
Garangao 2023 celebrations in Qatar
Garangao celebrations fall on the 14th night of Ramadan and may be also celebrated earlier. Garangao 2023 in Qatar will be on April 4.
Right after the sunset prayer (Maghrib), children head outdoors decked up in traditional clothes and knock on neighbors’ doors, collecting sweets, treats, and nuts in their bags. Children head door-to-door and sing the traditional Garangao song asking for blessings (and sweets).
While this still happens in many local neighborhoods, Garangao in recent years has become a more commercial celebration in an organized, safe environment. Many commercial establishments, hotels, malls, and organizations hold Garangao celebrations and events for kids across the city. Children may wear traditional clothes, participate in activities, win prizes, and get a customized bag of Garangao treats to take home with them. Such events are announced usually on the 11th or 12th days of Ramadan. Events to look forward to include those organized at Katara Cultural Village, Souq Waqif, Lagoona Mall, Royal Plaza Mall, Ain Hleetan Al Khor Souq, Hyatt Plaza Mall, Ezdan Mall Wakra, and more.
People also like to stock up on treats, sweets, candy, nuts, and pre-made packages to distribute to kids in the neighborhood and those who come knocking/visiting. Many shops also start selling these Garangao treats at the beginning of Ramadan.
Why is Garangao still relevant today?
Garangao is a cultural commemoration for children to partake in the Holy Month’s festivities. Celebrating it on the 14th night of Ramadan, it marks the halfway point for children who spent the previous two weeks fasting. It encourages them to continue fasting until the end of the month. In the modern context, Garangao traditions in Qatar are a great way to ensure kids get involved in the month and truly enjoy the spirit of Ramadan.
