Make a Sadaqah jar
Giving charity is an essential obligations during the month of Ramadan. Muslims are encouraged to increase charity and almsgiving, also known as ‘Sadaqah’ (voluntary charity) and ‘Zakat’ (obligatory charity).
Making sadaqah is an exciting way to introduce children to concepts of charity, and make them understand the importance of helping those in need.
The jar can be customized to their preferences with decorative items and a personal touch. Try encouraging them to set aside a portion of their weekly allowance for charity and discussing why it’s important.
Set creative goals
Having goals is important for us all. Children most of all can get overwhelmed by all the obligations during the month of Ramadan and to make it easy for them, it would be best to break it up into small doable chunks. For instance, for bigger kids you could reward them for memorizing a chapter of the Quran (surah), completing a fast, or helping out with household chores.
For smaller children, you could ask them to fast for a few hours, listen to Qura’n or help a friend. Alternatively you could also make a goal chart for each day of the month with daily tasks. Setting doable goals will help them develop a sense of accomplishment during the holy month.
