Places in Qatar: Names-origins/meanings.
Hello QLers-new and old! Finally, after a long time, I've finally managed to gather info on the names of places in Qatar and their respective meanings, and relations. I hope this serves as a handy guide to all residents,non-residents and soon-to-be residents of Qatar to understand the place. I have written about a place only briefly. If you have any additional information, please do post it in!
Qatar:
Derived from the word 'Catharei'. Pliny the Elder named the nomads as 'Catherei' as they constantly wandered in search for water. Ptolemy's map has a place called 'Catara' too. Qatar is actually called 'Dawlat Qatar', which means 'The State of Qatar'
Doha:
Derived from 'Dawhat', which means Bay or Gulf. However, many possible origins exist. In 1825, Doha City was founded as 'Al-Bidda'. It is also believed that the name "Doha" came from the Arabic ad-dawha, "the big tree." The reference might be to a prominent tree that stood at the site where the original fishing village arose, on the eastern coast of the Qatar peninsula
Dukhan:
Means 'Smoke' in Arabic. Possibly related to the fact that the 1st Oil field was discovered here.
Al Khor:
Means 'Bay' or 'an Inlet'.. Also, Al Khawr.
Al Rayyan:
Means 'Gates of Heaven'
Madinat Al Shamal:
Means 'North City' (Shamal=North; Madinat=City)
Madinat Al Khalifa:
Means 'City of the Khalifa'
Al Mansoura:
Means 'The Victorious'
Najma:
Means 'Precious' or 'Star'
Souq Waqif:
Means 'Standing Market'
Jebel Fuwairit:
Means 'Hill or Mountain of Fuwairit'
Many places have names beginning with:
'Umm':
'Umm' stands for mother (therefore, Umm Said= Mother of Said)
'Bin':
Bin' stands for 'Son of' (Hence, Bin Mahmood=Son of Mahmood).
'Abu':
'Abu' stands for 'Father of' (Hence Abu Samra=Father of Samra)
'Ain':
'Ain' means 'river or stream'. Hence 'Ain Khaled' is 'Khaled's well'.
If anyone knows the Origin of the name 'Al Wakrah',please post it here.
If anyone has the origin of any other place here, please do the same.
The above information has been sourced from many places, majorly online. If anything has been wrongly posted, please provide the necessary corrections. Highly appreciated!

wow! this is really an interesting post. thank you for sharing. :)
As far as the name Qatar is concerned I will go with the below.
The name may derive from "Qatara", believed to refer to the Qatari town of Zubara, an important trading port and town in the region in ancient times. It is from the Persian word "Gwadar" which means, a port, a bay-port.
Informative... like it =)
Heard somewhere that 'Matar Qadeem' is 'Old Airport'.
