The millionth dress code question...

By lapis_lazuli14

Hello All,
Yes, I'm probably just as frustrated trying to figure this out as you all may be hearing it lol...But here goes anyway, to the few patient and helpful souls:
Having lived in the region before from Cairo to Dubai, I know better than to pack tank tops and miniskirts...BUT, I have no idea of the 'level' of allowed, esp. given the recent rumors of a newly issued (and even at times enforced) dress code of shoulders and knees covered. I hate to be knit-picking, but coming from New York, much of my summer business wear consists of dresses and skirts, which though not short, do end immediately above my knee. Just how inappropriate is this and how do business women dress in Doha most often? Below is a photo of precisely the type of dress i have in mind (which takes up almost my entire closet though I'd likely wear a sweater or jacket over it). I don't in any way want to be disrespectful, but I'd prefer to avoid investing a fortune in a new wardrobe... PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE let me know if this is something totalkly fine, okay, semi-okay but barely, or 'leave it home!'...I'm immensely grateful...

Your dress seems to be fine.....not too revealing and not to conservative.

In general, it really fits you....

You will be just fine in the Int'l PR firm. If you were working in a Qatari govt job then no.

Really??

Women in my office wear it regularly.

... I'm sure you know that for most jobs she is not allowed to wear any dress which won't cover her knees. That is the rule over here.

Seriously You will be fine with those type of dresses, forget the cynical comments here.

It also depends on your work environment. If you are working in a local school, for instance, your dress code might be more conservative. If you are working for an American university you would wear Western business dress.

Oryx and polkadots-if there are ppl like you in doha, I'm gonna love this place! Lol..to reassure you, i dont have a gorilla back and if i did, i'd certainly wear a shawl to cover the shoulders lol..and after months of grueling hours in the gym and forfeited white mocha's, im a size 2-4 with most dresses about 2 sizes too big now so i won't be unappealingly oozing out of them lol... I feel a bit better now as it seems the consensus is pretty much that i wont be completely out of place for wearing them. Thanks a million! :):):)

yes - Qatar went thru a couple of weeks where you couldn't buy leggings anywhere

and you see people going to mall in clothes you couldn't wear to a disco..... strange!

Another good reason to keep skin covered is you don't want to over expose yourself to the sun

A nice hat is useful :)

Actually it depends where you are working for and whom...

i usually wear trousers or long skirts but that is my working environment

Have you ever met a chick who says 'Wow how sexy that guy has got a back like gorilla pubes?'

or 'Wow what a lovely huge rounded gut hanging over those speedos'

Keep it covered!!!! never mind religion just to make life aesthetically pleasing

Judging by the Corniche today - then what ever you fancy... esp guys....

Really I never wanted to see a man that wrinkly (like a baked potato) in shorts that barely covered his sagging bum.

If you must wear skimpy clothes make sure you have the figure - churns my stomach otherwise

And men with big pubey hairy gorilla backs...wear a t-shirt its VILE!!!!

Lovely, classic dresses. You may wish to carry a large, light silk shawl to throw over your shoulders. It will look very nice with that kind of simple dress.

This style dress is still professional and not revealing. I've worn like this, if I feel the skirt may be slightly short, I just wear some tights to match..

i think it is fine but not to go and make visits

u must take into consideration the believes of the people

u can go to lebanon and enjoy life

here in doha there is limitation and we must respect it to get the respect by return

pants (not too tight) and long sleved shirt or jacket is safest.

"do end immediately above my knee." "baggy" and not figure hugging - should be fine. As long as you look professional, there should be no issues. Maybe do try not to have overly revealing blouses, like I've seen some women in official meetings. Those examples you posted in the photos should be fine.

You will only know when you get here n start working. So, suggest you don't get a new wardrobe just yet.

LOL...I'd be a bit more reassured if it wasn't for skeptical words such as "should be"....or "I believe"....come on guys! how about an "Oh, ABSOLUTELY!" or "they're too baggy for the norm!" lol...Thank you so much tho! :)

They're acceptable I believe. I have seen many women in similar outfit.

These dresses should be fine. You may get a few stares too but even those in Abayas get them so nothing special.
