Karak Chai - roughly translated as  ‘strong tea’ - has long since become a part of Qatari culture. This exotically flavored tea is a very popular unofficial national drink in Qatar, enjoyed by locals and expats alike. It was introduced through the Indian Sub-Continent and is as exotic as the place from which it heralds.

Karak Chai is prepared by mixing black tea with a combination of milk, sugar and aromatic Indian herbs and spices. When you hear the name ‘Karak’ for the first time, it may sound a trifle harsh, but once tasted, you will immediately appreciate its smooth velvet-like taste and intoxicating aroma. You will quickly fall in love with the romance of this delightful brew!

The drink has become a main feature item in many restaurants throughout Qatar, such as Al Naimi Cafeteria, Al Bandar at the Corniche, Tea Time, Baba Chapatea and many more. The popularity of the beverage is evident from morning to night as cars line up in front of tea houses to acquire this daily refreshment.

Secret of the recipe

Making tea is very simple and everyone has their own way of preparing it, but the secret to true taste excellence depends on the ingredients, their proper rationing, and experience of brewing tea. For example, not every black tea is a good tea, so to identify great quality, you have to keep three things in mind:

Size

Normally, larger particles indicate a higher quality tea.

Color

Choose dark or bright full colored tea since this signifies better quality. Dull colors are almost always a symptom of a lower quality tea.

Flavor

Low quality teas can have a bitter smell from the first boil whereas great tea will smell sweet and when added to boiling water, will fill the air with a refreshing and pleasant aroma.

There is no doubt that Karak Chai is an exotic and sensuous fusion of herbs and spices that will transport you to the ancient temples of India. This unique and distinctive beverage will relax and soothe body, mind and soul. Try some today!
