World's greatest driving road
reasonably impressive...
Just have a look what they have created in a desert...
The Jebel Hafeet Mountain Road in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) is the greatest driving road in the world. Stretching for 7.3 miles and climbing nearly 4,000 feet, it boasts 60 corners and a surface so smooth that it would flatter a racetrack. It could easily be described as the eighth wonder of the world, but almost nothing is known about its creation. The road is cut into the Jebel Hafeet Mountain , the highest peak in the United Arab Emirates , the oil-rich Persian Gulf state. The mountain spans the border with Oman and lies about 90 minutes' drive southeast of the thriving city of Dubai . It looks down upon a dusty, desert landscape that belies a nation of astonishing wealth.
be there soon...is your porsche tuned??
You'll need a navigator.. I'm available :)
National Geographic is back to calling it the Persian Gulf on Aug.2008 map..Just got the magazine yesterday and is on the back of my toilet ready for reading.
Back to original thread..my fav. drive is Big Sur 100 mph in A porsche (someone elses)..cant wait to try out the Jebel Hafeet drive
gotcha, Sir brit.
TIT! I wasn't worried about you, i was more concerned with others who may drag the thread further off course. :)
brit, in the future I will announce it when I say something that's serious. OK?
Not going there, but governments aren't averse to using any means of propoganda..
Do we still call Beijing, Peking ? NO!
... and the Western Media are owned mainly by the Jews, right, brit?
Very good article..
Dr Najjar perception is correct, however, in reality , the name is coined by the western media to "piss off" Iran.
It is the same as calling the country Burma, when it is in fact Myanmar..
now i know,.. thanks..
Read the link from amnesia, mjamille.
who's dr.najjar?
Nothing is more relaxing than flying like an Eagle in Heaven !!
Fabulous! amazing wat human being can do !!
I guess Dr. Najjar would agree to my last post, amnesia.
amnesia, I told my children it's called "The Gulf" (Al Khaleej) And I showed them all the beautiful beaches. And they never asked me if it was Arabian or Persian or American.
On a side note, in Arabic, the Gulf, doesn't refer to the body of water, it refers to the physical land area of the GCC. So that is what the Arabian Gulf came from.
Here's a nice read though if anyone is interested.

Sorry for going off topic. Was not my intention.

i think the among the only threads here that doesn't turn political is the one about the body hair... :P
I believe this road was completed in 2006. Whilst its a great piece of architecture, I wouldn't go as far as to call it the 8th wonder of the world..
Oh well, at least it's fun!
:)
Thanks, amnesia. brit, maybe for the GI's so they would find the right target?
lol relax MagicDragon, I'm not on QL 24/7, I'm usually on ILQ.
I can best explain it from a regional method as the term football.
In the US, football is called soccer. It's a simple way of 'when in Rome'.
So in most arabic countries it's referred to the Arabian Gulf.
People are indeed free to call it whatever you want. You could call it the Rainbow Gulf if you wanted. I was simply stating that in Qatar (and also in other Arabic countries) it's called the Arabian Gulf. (It's also stated as that on Google Maps for example)
The funny thing is, I was just joking around but seems that's what the focus was on in this thread.

The term Arabian Gulf was coined mainly after the first Gulf war.. IMHO mainly to piss off the Iranians..
anyway, i'll still call it Persian Gulf..
corrupt Western naming! Probably influenced by Zionists.
The correct name for the waterway is the Persian Gulf, and should not be referred to as the Arabian Gulf when using the English Language. The Persian Gulf is the preferred term in Unites States English, UK English and United Nations, as well as the Wikipedia naming policy. I do not disagree with a mention in the article Arab World which mentions that the term Arabian Gulf as a term used by certain Arab countries, but I believe that by putting Arab/Persian Gulf, it only confuses people. As there are two 'gulfs' around Arabia. The Red Sea (known as the Arabian Gulf in certain publications and the Persian Gulf. (JosephLondon 22:08, 19 September 2007 (UTC))

"We don't call it Persian Gulf we call it Arabian Gulf". I was just asking "why"? And I never got an answer, instead wrong numbers. Maybe Meaningful doesn't know that a billion is one thousand million and that there are at the most 350 million Arabs on this planet.
hmm, can we just call it either way we want?
Meaningful, where do the other 5.2 billion Arabs live?
funny that you say that, meaningful. I heard there are only 6.3 billion people on earth. Where do those Arabs live then?
and 10 billion and half arabs call it Arabian Gulf
I dont live with example..Reather I prefer to be an example!
vignale, more than 5 and a half billion people call it the Persian Gulf.
MD , the Iranians call it the Persian Gulf, Everyone on this side Call it the Arabian Gulf, because this is the Arabian Side.
oh ok,.. think amnesia should answer it.. :)
Why Arabian Gulf?
Nice but I am staying loyal to my first love, the Dukhan road. I travel on it most days and have watched it grow over the last few years. I am the only person I know who likes it, poor road.
why what?
why?
We don't call it Persian Gulf we call it Arabian Gulf :P
@Pieman, he already is
