World’s First All-Women City.

The patriarchal kingdom of Saudi Arabia creates an all-female city where (the arguably better half) of humanity can work freely, within Islamic guidelines.

Saudi Arabia has an increasingly educated female population, but its ultraconservative interpretation of Wahabi sharia law and rigid tribal customs forbid women from interacting with men. The upshot is chronic female unemployment. An utterly Saudi solution is underway. Why shift cultural mores, when, instead, you can raise up a completely new, self-sustaining city that will be fully devoid of men? The pilot project will go live in 2012 in the Eastern Province city of Hofuf. Smaller “ladies-only” communities will then pop up in capital city Riyadh.

Saudi businesswomen cooked up the concept, according to the paper Al Eqtisadiah, and the ruling monarchy endorsed the scheme as a way to lower female unemployment while staying “consistent with the privacy of women according to Islamic guidelines and regulations,” Saudi Industrial Property Authority (Modon) said in a statement. Modon is leading the project development.

and what if they need to change a tyre at 5.30 in the morning or they want to buy a bottle of water or chips late in the night. Will they not need the baqalas with our own guys from gods own country to be open late into the night to serve them

Interesting idea, however I am concerned it will lead to the apartheid of women in Saudi. First you give them their own ghetto and next you ban them from other areas.

Again , it's amazing how news can be misleading and headlines can distort facts.

This is not an all women city. Parts of the industrial complex will have areas where women only will be working at certain manufacturing plants / sites.

There 's no such thing as a "Wahabi sharia law"The Sharia is basd on the Holy Quran and the Swaheeh Ahadeeth,Wahab is a beutiful name ascribed to Allah the Almighty ,then Wahabi can mean Allah's and in that sense you are right if you call the Sharia as Whahabi Sharia, not forgetting the malice intended when prejudiced people refer to the true Monotheistic Islam rejuvanated by the likes of the great Imams including Imam Muhammed bin Abdulwahab, anyway HAPPY EID MUBARAK TO ALL QLers

The women are expected to live in adjacent neighborhoods. But who will drive them to work?
